03 type flash block connector on an 02 WRX?

Postby JimbobUK » Sat Feb 11, 2006 6:34 am

Hi All,

I just tried to read the flash image from a Euro bug-eye 2002 WRX (Pr**rive PP)...

ECUExplorer reported it as a [AF531]... (no -7xxx)...

I was expecting the flash block connector to be the same 01 style as per my 01 WRX...

It looked like an 03 WRX 4 pin flash block... (I confirmed the appearance and wire colours since getting home as being 03 WRX style).

I didn't try to jumper the connector, as it isn't my car, and I wanted to double check before I stuffed some bits of wire in!

There was also a 4 pin black connector (long / thin ish) taped to the same bunch of wires (going to test connector and flash block). Does anyone know what this could be? - Sorry, I forgot to take my camera!

I couldn't read the flash using ECUFlash (but i'm still not sure whether or not it should read without the flash block connected).

Could it be that the flash block connector was changed before the end of the bug-eyes?

If the loom is this different (having extra pins doing things for this ECU), could it be that the ECU image may be incompatible with my 01 ECU - even if I can read it?

I guess I may get another opportunity to have a play with the car in a few days, so at least perhaps I should be able to grab the image.

I'm often hearing about people swapping ECU's between model years of WRX... Does anyone know roughly which ECUs are compatible with what model years?

JimbobUK,

Euro WRX's need the flash block connector shorted in order to read the ROM, see:

http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.php/ ... gToYourECU

I can confirm this 100% on a Euro MY03 WRX and a Euro MY04 STi. I am 'confident' its the same on the MY02's also.

Note that due to the PPP the actual ECU ROM version reported may not reflect the actual model year of the vehicle. See my thread below for more info (post 6 & 7):

http://forums.openecu.org/viewtopic.php?t=965

Let us know how you get on.

-Steve.

Yes, WRX02 - I recently pulled the rom from a friends STI MY02 with that.

To save me hunting through the forums (and still getting it wrong) procedure did you use?

I'm:
connecting open port
connecting green flash connectors
key on
press 'read ROM'

but all i get is a error message...

i didn't think i needed to. Car is an STI UK and in the text is says that i don't need to do that:

"For all STi’s or any Drive-By-Wire (DBW) Impreza models that is all you need do."

I'm happy to try it though.. Am i likely to let the smoke out of my PCM?

Thanks,

Thanks,

I've just corrected my original Scoobypedia article. I needed to jumper my friends UK MY03 STi PP* to read the ROM. In the last 12 months or so playing and reading many articles I've never found anyone blow anything by correctly jumpering the flash block connector. I was just as worried as you in the beginning so know what your starting from. You wait until you flash your first ROM! Your heart is skipping a beat until it correctly starts when your finished. Now a reflash is like filling the car with petrol, only quicker!
