I'm having the same problem...double checked the shorting block 0.1 Ohms, tried making my own w/ some 14awg stranded wire and a pair of spade terminals....same problem each way. Currently I am seeing 11.21 volts as the voltage which I'm assuming is way too high. I've even gone so far as to test the resistance behind the female plug (car plug) and I still see .1ish ohms across the back of it. Also (and i'm not sure this is abnormal or not) the only way I can read the rom is w/o the connector plugged in. any help is greatly appreciated

* What market/model/year car do you have?
* What cable do you have? OpenPort 1.2? 1.0?
* What is your battery voltage? It might be low...

I spent hours chasing this problem. I went as far as tracing green lead to the passengers side of the compartment only to find another green connector. I took a impedence reading there and it cleared the low voltage problem. I suspect that there was some inductance or something on the line. I don't think you need to trace it like I did but the check with the volt meter seem to cleared the problem.

Hobbes: I'm unclear on what you did to solve the problem?

I'm thinking that I discharged something on that lead. I dont know if testing the block with the voltmeter discharged something that allowed the ECU to see the correct voltage again. I bring this up because I used the same connectors and cables after that and was able to continue to reflash. I don't think it is a software or hardware issue but something inherient in the ECU's operation.

Try this.

restore everything back to normal. (meaning remove test connectors)
Disconnect the battery
Press the brake to discharge the voltage (simular to ECU reset)
Reconnect the battery
reconnect test connectors

I'm thinking that capacitance some where in the ECU is inducing irratic voltage reading.

I think my voltage meter reading did something simular.

Sorry...USDM WRX Automatic...2002
Just ordered the Tactrix cable in the past 2 weeks...so 1.2 I guess?
It was battery voltage, I'm an idiot.

FWIW, flashing my ecu was MUCH easier than I ever anticipated, though figuring out injector scaling (I run ethanol) was a bit of a pain. I have modded stock injectors, that I previously had scaled to 760 on my UTEC (prior to me running ethanol). When I initially reflashed, I tried 760 again....SUPER lean, I ended up backing down to 580. I'm betting it is because of running ethanol instead of straight gas....anyways, once I got everything dialed in the car felt great....hopefully I can improve on my HP and 1/4 mile numbers now that everything seems to be working better.

glad to hear it is working out.

the OpenPort 1.2 cable has a 12V regulated output for the relfashing voltage that has only a 50mV dropout, which means your battery voltage must be greater than 12.050 V to get 12V out of the regulator, otherwise the voltage will drop. you should usually have 12.6V or more, so this is not a problem.

only the 2001-2005 WRXs use the 12V for reflashing. on the Subaru drive-by-wire cars or the Mitsubishis, the voltage is internally generated by the CPU.
