ewg, downpipe tune running questions (thx)

Postby jason bouchard » Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:50 pm

ok i have an 06 sti, with a cat-back
i have but didnt install a UR uppipe with a 38mm tial EWG
and a helix dp

if install the dp and the ewg can i run it untuned ?

( the wg spring is set to 1 bar(14.5 psi) which is stock for an sti
will i get boost spiking ?
( i was thinking if i get the stock internal wg closed ( extra spring, or welded shut) and have the EWG to work, i can really overboost ( boost spike) can i ??

2nd if and when i get EM ( im lookin at cobb accessport) is there any downloadable tunes for tbe and ewg on an otherwise stock car ?

thanks

sorry if my questions are alittle crappy, im new with this, and i want to learn, i am not a noob though, but a noob with subaru more or less ; )

First off, if your going to go with the ewg, I would definatly get a tune. I would think it would not be safe to rely on wastgate spring pressure. Second, there are no premade stage maps for any engine managment that i have seen for a turboback and ewg. For turboback this would be commonly known as a stage 2. With the ewg u will require some custom tuning, as the subaru boost maps are set up for the factory wg.

@jason bouchard

first of all I don't understand why you choose to go for an EWG on an otherwise stock car

...if you stick to the EWG I would suggest to go for an aftermarket boost controller (preferably AVCR)...

ready maps for such conversions you are not going to find anywhere...

No need for an aftermarket boost controller. Excellent choice going to EWG. +1 for improving VE.

My advice to you is learn how to tune or take it somewhere to get it tuned. You will be able to drive the car gingerly to place where it will be tuned if need be. And did you just say you want to buy a Cobb accessport?

The external will help it hold boost better. The stock internal wastegate pretty much blows open. You can drive it around untuned and it's perfectly safe. I went from internal to external running the same Protune map and even went with a bigger turbo and the afrs were still fine.

You will need to drastically rework your initial and max wastegate duty maps. Most likely, since the external gate has a much higher default spring pressure (like 14psi instead of 7psi), you will need much lower values. Start very low and work your way up. You probably do not need to do too much to the PI maps.

There is no reason why the stock ECU cannot control it for you.
