Pulling a cobb map, adding to it and reflashing back....

Postby 4tun8 » Thu May 18, 2006 4:36 pm

Impossible I take it? I was working on this with my buddies STI....I really just wanted to add launch control to the car, but I wasn't to look at anything....

It downloaded the rom, but it shows nothing, kinda strange.

I've been doing searches but to no avail really, I hope colby or someone can help.

I did think that maybe if we unmarried the cobb access port and then did the launch control, then remarried the cobb that maybe it would work, but I'm not 100% sure and my friend isn't real keen about doing that.

Any help would be appreciated, I can post the rom I guess...

I don't think this is a 'good' upload, as it is half the size it should be. How were you going to add launch control? What year/model is the sti?

Ok so the launch control from the program is evo specific?

Maybe I'm just VERY confused. I figured the check box from the program would be there on the STI as well, I take it that it's not....

LC is not part of the factory Subaru programs, nor has anyone figured out how to add it.

It will most likely take actual reprogramming of the logic, not just fidgeting with the maps.

or somehow stealing it from one of the jdm sti ecu's that come with launch control.

The launch control was not stock on my 03 evo, and I was able to add it, I figured that it was some sort of switch that basically told the car if it's not sensing vehicle speed then the rev limit is X, if there is vehicle speed then the rev limit is Y.

I guess I was wrong though, but this is why I believed I would be able to do it on the STI.

Either way I can't do anything with the cobb flashed car.....and that's still a problem, still open to suggestions.

on which JDM STI does launch control come as stock? ecutek offer this feature on their mapswitch roms - are you sure you're not thinking of this?

I figured I'd ask in this thread instead of starting a new one...

I have an accessport and my ecu is flashed with stage 2.5 (vf34). My wastegate duty cycles have to be off, because I'm overboosting. I have more mods than suggested for the map, so i KNOW it needs customization.

Will I be able to download my ecu with the openport, and then edit the map using enginuity/etc? Or will the rom be encrypted in some way by cobb? this doesn't seem possible (encryption of any sort), but I thought I would ask.

I'm really interested in updating my map, as it's got potential to blow my engine :( I'll be limping around until this is resolved.

PS: sorry for newb questions...still trying to get into the scene.

You may or may not be able to pull the map down. Cobb and Ecutek are both trying to lock down the reading and flashing. Give it a shot, it won't hurt to try.

If it DOES work and you get a .ROM or .HEX file downloaded and Ecuflash says it was successful, then you are good to go. You can open it and modify the wastegate maps, then reupload it and it should be all good. Ecuflash probably has the wastegate maps defined for you, so you can just modify them immediately and reflash it right back. I really don't use Ecuflash to tune, but you may have to save the file for it to fix the checksum for you, if Cobb still has the checksum in there.

Be careful. Keep a backup. If you accidently overwrite your ECU with a factory ROM image (say that you downloaded from here), your Cobb AP becomes a paperweight as the license will disappear. Cobb will charge you hundreds to unmarry your AP so you can remarry it.

Keep in mind Cobb wants you to buy Streettuner for $195, so they can and will "break" the ability for non-Cobb software to read and reflash the ECU. It's only a matter of time. I could speculate that it will never happen unless they swap your AP hardware, and that it will only lock out on newer AP handhelds, but no one really knows and obviously Cobb isn't going to answer questions about it.

Also keep in mind that when you cannot modify realtime maps, period. Only the base map. And when you reflash with Ecuflash, your realtime maps disappear. You need to really think about this and understand what is happening, and know what is in the realtime maps vs what is in the basemaps.

great info, thanks!

My accessport is old, so if they've done the attempts at locking down the ecu's within the past year or so, I should be safe.

I only use base maps...not a fan of real-time maps.

Duly noted about the accessport maps being reflashed. I'll probably download the map from my ecu, unmarry my accessport, then reflash with ECU flash. Better safe than sorry, that's for sure. I'd hate to have to start from scratch with the tuning, or have the accessport be useless.

I read a post from Trey on another forum that said that the AP 2.0 would include the lock-out to protect their IP. For users with AP 1.0 and the current ST, you are able to read and flash with Ecuflash.

I'll be curious to see how that plays out after all backlash that Ecutek took over their lockouts and eventual reversal.

They allow you to revert to stock. AFAIK, unmarrying your Cobb would do the same. I don't see any problem with them doing that.

But if you get an AP you won't be able to use Openecu and vice versa. You will have to make a choice. You can't do both.

I think the choice is obvious. ;)
