Stock ECU changes neede for UP/DP combo

Stock ECU changes neede for UP/DP combo

Postby Xcelor8 » Sun May 07, 2006 7:36 pm

Question, I have a UP and a DP I'd like to install in my 04 wrx pretty much everything I've read says it's ok on a '02-'03 becuase the tuning will handle it. I have a 04, and I'd like to install the pipes, I'll have the correct cable to do my own flashing with enginuity soon, and I'm getting familar with the software to tune it with, eventually I'd like to do all my tuning on my own car.

What points would I have to change and monitor to make running the UP/DP combo safe on my stock car?

I'm sure the OL/CL transition times need to be altered, anything else? I was thinking of maybe bumping up the boost fuelcut #, though I don't believe I'll actually spike any higher than the car does stock.

I'm not expecting or trying to get all the HP now, I'd just like to get my stock up-pipe out of there and put the DP in while I'm doing that and have the car on a safe tune, safe tune being much more important than HP (anyday).

I'd then be monitering my car with tari's datalogger to make sure everything looked OK, but any help on hints on things specfically for me to watch would be nice. Probabaly be watching 3 main things, AFR, IAM, and 02 (stock sensor)

Stock 04 WRX, STI UP and Helix catted DP

Any input? help? advice? Working map that I could either upload or atleast look at to help me?

Well the obvious 'fixes' are the EGT CEL limit, open/closed loop transistion delay, and possibly P420 CEL disable if your DP is catless.

 For the first time, wish me luck, hopefully everything goes ok, I'm leaving for a 400 mile trip later in the day

Any final words of advice, tips or links?

I'm using this procedure for hooking it up to my '04 wrx, I got the jumper thingy from with my cable . http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.php/ ... gToYourECU

I got the newest version of the Stock ecu from here, I'm going try that first, then I have a stage one map I made for myself. I just got the cable tonight, I had a different cable hooked up before, but I think the drivers will work just the same.

Going to use ecuexplorer to do the flashing, not exactly sure how everything works, I guess I'll figure it out as I go.

Noob jumping in feet first

OK i flashed the new stock map in, and the car still runs WOOOOT! I gotta go drive for a bit, then maybe I'll try stage 1 map...

Edit I like this map AF4TF520F runs good on my car, much better than the stock A4TF300F map my car had.

Well my car is now running a stage 2 map, and it runs good, I noticed the iam dropped to 15, probably the wonderful gas here in MN. With the map/s I uploaded (into my ecu) there seems to be no issues witht he ol/cl loop modes, though the values have changed from the stock settings, the latest greatest Subrau map (520)was better, but I could still get it to act up when lifting sometime inteh 4k-5k range. I was able to get 27.5 mpg on the subaru map, freeway, wicked crosswind, doing 73 mph and I average around 24 mpg now running my stage 2 map, If I'm not too heavy on the throttle.

I'm running basically the same map that are available online in http://www.osecuroms.org/ though I don't have their most updated version running in my car, just an older one.

I now have the sti uppipe in and a helix catted dp, Perrin y-pipe, it seems to work really nice, though I still need to order my Catback. Love it overall, everything is just better than ever.

Finally someone came out of the woodwork... please do elaborate on this viewpoint. Don't get me wrong... I'm not challanging you on it. I've been waiting for some "concrete" info to surface pertaining to this guy... he was kind of cryptic in his PM responces as to his abilities and experience.

I think it's important for people to know who they are dealing with when it comes to tuning their cars... similar skepticism can be directed towards ev8siv3 for that matter so as you can see, I'm not singling anyone out.

So no one wants to comment on this guy's capabilities or lack there of if that's the case.

Jon, let's have some details please if you have them.

I would be interested to see what Jon have to say about me.

Instead of discrediting me, all of those with some tuning skill should post there work here and help others some more. This is what this forum is all about.

I do not have to lie and all of those that I have HELP them with there car can post if the results shown on their cars are lies, since all tuning is remote and all data provided by them. I believe they are liars and dishonest people in providing me results that aling with others tunes on other forums.

All of the people I have help can a test to my skills and good "customer service" offer to them.

I do not put any one car at risk and take small steps in tuning. Each one of them can a test to the many versions ;) vx-m, where x=1-9 and m=1-xx.

This is so because remote tuning takes time and environmental conditions affects results. Even the human nature :)

I do not recommend or redistribute my roms because there are custom tuning and can easy cause server knock to some cars, since boost occurs early and goes into maps with higher loads w/ high AFR.

I do not use Cobb maps or ecutek maps, since I find all to behave incorrectly on the vehicles I come across, due to other issues or cross roms :)

All of them will tell you that I prefer to tune from stock, unless there force me too.

I lend my suggestions to others and fully state what I have done to the rom and expected effects.

I constantly work with owners, even calling them and talking to them on what to look for.

I teach them how to drive for logs and to detect problems.

I do not recommend roms to anyone, since each car is very unique.

If there is a problem that I cannot get resolve, which is nardly likely, except for one car, I post and contact my Subaru mechanics here were I live.

We all have contribute information to this forum, some more than others.

I am not on here to sell my services, but to HELP, since many of us were once novices.

Each Owner have a choice on what there want and advice me.

I at present, because of my new Job, I do not have time for tuning any more and those who I have help can a test to my resolve to finishing their tunes. I have not left them out.

My tuning experience is like anyone else on this forum. It just so happens that I have been around JDM stuff more longer that some people and have been analysis logs on cars, expecially mine for a long time and have learn from other on this forum, NASIOC and here in my region.

I do not boast about my tunes, and even if I did, it would be foolish, since I am the only one posting stuff.

I do not understand how a forum that want to help people can be like this.

It would seem that it brings pleasure to others seeing people having problems and liable to destroy their engines.

I can see why Cobbs and EcuTek and others do not distribute tuning software in to novice hands. Its Dangerous.

People are just taking roms and reflashing and ending up with a lot of problems.

All of the owners of the cars I am currently working on or finish working because of their time, can never say that I took a rom from somewhere else and use it on their car. Even when I was ask to use Cobb STG2, I didn't. I now have people that see more power and safety in my tune than even cobbs stg2, which have some issues, but thats expected since some got the maps through distribution.

All of my tunes, including the STI, I have use Ign. Temperature Compensation (also search and added code to this site for the JDM STU & JDM WRX) to compensate for changing temperatures.

Again, Jon, I look forward to your issue with me.

Oh, if reference is made to the AutoWrx I am still helping out in Canada, you will see from the logs and from the owners mouth, that the car always had issue(s). I stated that the car made power with high timing, which do not make since and signify a problem. If that was the case, my tuning skills would have shown that in all my tuning post, which it hasn't.

That tune is in the process to make it safe, which will result in a lot of power loss, but safety means everything.

Not one owner can stay that I made their car drive through knock. I always tell them to stop the car and drive like a baby as soon as you see -ve kc or knocking in 2500+.

I leave it up to all those who I tune to respond to the sarcasm and discredit.

Djennison, you just cannot take anyone map and use it so, especially when that tune involves making power. Each car is different, even in stock tune and would require additional tuning.

You got a map w/ IAM=16, knocking and pushing 15psi :) Very nice. For me, I take it in steps :), unless both cars were the same [approx.]

This is not ev8siv3 fault, since this rom was tune for his car.

What I did was to remove 2 degrees of timing in the high load maps from the affect area you stated you had issues. 3500-4500rpm.

I have not seen any logs with issues, but except for almost zero kc on a IAM=16, which mean the car reduce it automatically, since may have pinged badly.

In all emails I have delt with people I help, changes looks like this:-

vx-x.hex
1. Reduce ign correc in 3000-4500rpm range in high load areas
2. Boost map refinement
3. Open-close loop refinement
4. Reset IAM from 16 to 8
5. wg refinement
6. Minor jdm stuff entered, since those changes were in the rom you had before :)

The owner does not need to know what the hell he did. He can follow it and review it.

All the people that I have help, can tell you that my IAM was never set to anything over 12 or 14. No need too. JDM learning learns quickly.

Djennison, I wish you all the best in your tune and I hope that the others (voices) will help you here, since there have the time (voicing) and I don't.

PS. I do not post roms. I prefer to post results, since as I stated before, some of these roms are all out w/ high safety. I spend alot of time questioning the owner how the car is behaving and if I did not here them for a long time, I try to get logs from them to see how the car behaving. I take performance seriously

Americans do no drive like us from part of my world where every day is JGTC :) So I make sure that the test are very rigourous with 2,3,4, 5gear runs with a/c and up high as possible. I even recommended to an owner, put something heavy in the car and go and test :)

Again, good luck and you have the rom that you can show others, since it is not my tune.
