Have Openport, now what?

Postby salvi » Fri Apr 21, 2006 8:53 pm

Ok, I'm quite new to this site and really need some good help. My friend let me use his Openport and I have downloaded Ecuflash and installed it on my laptop. Where do I go from here? All I want to do is to copy my current ECU for right now.

Also, how can I tell whether I have the Openport 1.0 or 1.2?

The car is a USDM 2005 STI.

Ok, from some reading I know that I have to do the following:

1. Have ignition turned OFF.
2. Connect the green “test” mode connectors.
3. Jumper the flash block connector.
4. Connect OBDII cable to OBDII connector.
5. Open Ecuflash application.
6. Select COM port from Options> Ports menu.
7. Select ECU model from Options> Model menu.

How do I jumper the flash block connector by using two cables? 2005 USDM STI. I know that there are some jumpers, but I don’t have it and I hope making it is simple. This is basically the only question that I have for the entire process. If someone can help me out, I will greatly appreciate it. Also, what are some things that I should avoid while doing this?

You have an OpenPort 1.2

There is no flash block on the STi, or any of the DBW models. All you need to connect is the test mode connector.

I don't believe the flash block connector is required on many newer cars. I read out my 2004 STI without it, just the green connector.

If you try without the flash block connected but it turns out it is required you're not going to hurt anything. Just try with the green connector only. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, it doesn't...

When I had my 04 WRX and bought the Cobb Accessport, it required the block connector. I'll give it a try and see.

My car only needed the green test connectors put together.

Ok, followed the steps and at first I was getting an error while trying to read from the ECU. After checking the connections, I found that the OBDII connector connection was not connected right, fixed the connection, tried again and SUCCESS!

I was able to read my ECU and saved the file. From here I have a question:

1. After I saved the file, I tried to read it from the directory, but it does not show anything there although I can verify that the file is located in that directory. Do I need to save the file as a certian extension?

You need to save it as ".hex", but it may also come out as a 160kb file, if it does then you need to convert it to the 192kb format.

ecuedit has this feature in its drop downs as well.

Ok, so I should save the file as a .hex file. If the file comes to a 160kb size file, then I need to useEcuEdit to convert it to 192kb file size? I haven't downloaded nor installed/used EcuEdit yet, I thought that everything in regards reading/flashing was done with EcuFlash.

Here's another question:

1. Lets say that a friend of mine uses OpenECU software in order to tune and create a map for his car. If I have the same mods as he does, could I use EcuFlash to copy his ROM, save it, and reflash the rom to my ECU?

Non DBW ECUs have flash block (white connector) in addition to the Green "diag" connectors. The DBW ECUs only have the Green "diag" connectors. Just wanted to streighten that out.

Can someone please explain this statement to me? I read my ECU for a second time and saved it with a .hex extension. I went to the saved file and the size of it is 1MB.
