Tip To Prevent ECU Locked UP from flashing.

Postby Spec C Wannabe » Thu Apr 02, 2009 5:27 am

I just had a nightmare from freezing up my ECU. ECU was just recovered by Colby. Now waiting for it to arrive.

At that time when this happended I was panic and forgot to save the flash log. However, I think I remember that Ecuflash reported a "Checksum Error" and the program is terminated. Can that be the case??

After the incident, It just came to my mind on how to prevent such dreded thing from happening again.

Here are some tips that I summed up from my research on this website:

1. DBW ECU has a Checksum function that can cause a problem if we don't save it before flashing. So, save it everytime before flashing.

2. If you don't know it for real, Do not flash any ROMs from differnt models or even diffent model years into your ECU.

2. Car battery must be in full power. If we leave the ignition key at ON position for too long, chances are that the battery will be drained out to a point that flashing process can not be completed.

3. Laptop battery must be at least 1/3 of full power.

4. Turn off every battery-consumed devices in the car ie. Air Cond, Radio, Air Con Fan, Head light, Interior light, Turbo Timer

5. Turn off every irrelevant application ie. Antivirus, Screensavers, Wi Fi, Hot Sync

6. Always "Test Write" before "Real Write"

7. Make sure that all connections such as green plug, flash block connector and OBDII cable are snug and don't touch them during the flashing process

8. In case anything goes wrong during the flash, DO NOT turn the ignition to OFF. We still have a chance left as long as we don't turn the ignition key to OFF

9. With the Ignition key stays at ON position, try the flashing again and again and hope that it went through without any problem.

10. If the flash is still not success, at least save the Ecuflash log for further investigation.

Do I miss anything??

Your input is highly appreciated.

The checksum fix is unrelated to the error you got when flashing and would not impact flashing if it wasn't applied (vehicle wouldn't start but you could still flash). The checksum fix (or recalculation) is automatically applied whenver saving in RomRaider or Ecuflash, so it is not something that you have to worry about.

One of the most likely causes of this is ignition off after a flash fail. It is a poor design by Subaru because of this.
Also, flashing an incorrect ROM can cause it not to run; for example, a serial 7058 ROM into a CAN 7058 ECU is bad, and vice versa.

Thanks for comment. If the Checksum is not the case , then I have to think again what stoned my ECU????

May be it caused by a glitch in power supply.

I should have saved the log.

How can I save it?
