UL/ DL sequence question

Im noob to this
and the last couple times i had a local friend help me UL/DL the maps from my car. I like to do it myself but still have reservations. Concern to do the wrong thing and kill my ECU.

Is there a "DETAIL" step by step instructions how to DL/UL roms to and from the ECU
And Can any of the steps if not in sequence , kills the ECU ?

scoobypedia has some good info as well as warnings, written by some of the folks here. I havent flashed mine yey but when I do, I will be paying VERY close attention to them, having said that, reading from the ecu is pretty safe I think ... I've read of my ecu many many times.
