1.33 seg faults / app error on read

on XP Pro, this has something to do with the driver, but in any case, I've used 1.29, 1.30 etc no problems, installed 1.33 today, starts up, "sees" the cable, but when I hit read the app seg faults with an "application error".
clickon details and of course its when referencing something in ftd2xx.dll
so i tried installing the drivers direct (from the installed 1.33 directory). no dice. I tried installing the old drivers (from 1.29) ,no dice. all same behaviour. Uninstalling, then installing 1.29, everything works again. uninstalling, then installing 1.33 same problem.
Also tried to "hit cancel" when prompted to install drivers during the install, and that did not work either.
so what is the correct ftdi driver for a 1.2 cable using 1.33 ?
the 1.33 distro includes 3.1.12.1, the 1.29 uses 3.1.7.1. Neither seems to work for me with 1.33... but which one is "right" for 1.33 anyhow ?
1.33 edits ROM files no problem.. just cant use em with 1.29
