First off, with the ability to modify your own ECU, I (and I think Colby stated this before) hope to see people start to learn more as they have tools readily available to them. Instead of just pirating other peoples' work, you could do your own tuning and get better results.

Also, running a tune that wasn't made for your car (a la EcuTek) may actually cause problems. There are always variations car to car and running a tune that is too aggressive may not work so well on your car.

Those were both me. As to the copyright of rom images, we are in a gray area here. Subaru could claim IP, but already sold us the image. Cobb could claim IP on the changes. However, reverse engineering is legal. That is how Cobb got there knowledge. Posting them for purposes of knowledge is protected. But when people start flashing the custom images, or worse yet, make a clone Access ECU to get the cheaper Access Port... Now they have a case. And if someone gets a strong case, a lot of stuff can be shut down through intimidation. After all, who of us can afford to fight a real legal battle?

For a solution, could we null the first few bytes of boot code? That way we are making the code unusable for any purpose other than study...

okay, i won't post any of the cobb or ecutek dumps that I am able to get to avoid any problems for the board or the cause in general. if anyone would like copies of what I get for research and comparison purposes, please let me know.

oh, and about the data points being identified already, is a tuning interface currently in development? if so, how far along is it?

I don't think any official tuning interface is in development. I'd like to begin work on one.

I just finished with figuring out the offsets for the 2002 and 2004 stock wrx's. (well, most of them anyway.)

I'd like to get a format for describing the locations set down in stone before we get too far.

I posted somewhere that if we had a way to strip the first few bits of boot code, we should be able to safely post anything after it has been sanitized. Should be simple to write, and then we can learn from them.

I'd agree cobb/ecutek are likely on very shaky legal ground w.r.t. claiming any rights to their maps, but it's just not worth the hassle that could be caused by posting them.

Folks here easily have the expertise to come up with a similar solution.
