2004 USDM STI ECU read/flashing

Postby Freon » Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:28 am

I'm going to start a thread here for the work I will be doing on my 2004 USDM STI since there isn't a whole lot going on here.

So far ECUflash only lists the 2002-2003 WRX and 2004-2005 WRX. Colby, do you think I'd harm anything by attempting to read out the ROM with the incorrect ECU selected? I don't think I will, but thought I'd ask.

The 2004 USDM STI is DBW, while I don't think any of the above models are, so I wonder if I'll have much luck at all. I'm guessing the DBW ECU has some key differences.

It won't work. I have dissasembled relevant parts of a STi ROM and the procedure leading up to loading the kernel is very similar - even uses the same challenge response algorithm as the 04/05 WRX. The processor (SH7058) and reflash procedure are different, so I have to write another reflash kernel. My main roadblock right now is that I don't have an extra STi ECU laying around to develop on. Find me a cheap / loaner STi ECU and the ECU connectors, and I will add STi reflashing... STi ECUs are hard to come by for some reason.

I would think that finding one from a junkyard would be pretty easy - especially now that it's winter time. I will do what I can to find one and maybe help out.

The question is, do you need both the '04 and '05 since the '05 is a little different? Also, how much would you need as far as wires go?

Someone has kindly donated a '04 ECU. Hopefully it will arrive today. I'm not sure how different the '05 is - I'd like to get ahold of one and see. Let me know if you find one.

Do you expect that the STi and LegacyGT ECUs will use the same mechanism?

I think all of the DBW ECUs use the same processor and code base, so there should only be minor differences.

The biggest difference I know of is the immobilizer that was added to the '05 models. I'm not sure how that affects things, though.

The largest difference is that the '04 uses a 7055, '05 is a 7058. The 7058 has double the nonvolatile memory of the 7055 (512kB vs. 1MB). Processor and peripherals are almost identical.

Would an '05 Legacy GT ECU help you out? I think I can get ahold of one from a wrecked car pretty easily. Should be the same as the STI, definitely uses the 7058.

It would be really nice if we can figure out the comm channel from the ECU to the body integrated unit (BIU). At least on the '05 LGT, the BIU can be reprogrammed via a select monitor. Immobilizer ID codes are in the BIU, ECU, each transponder key, and the cluster ECU. It would be nice to have a "spare" ECU to experiment with that would still work with the immobilzer system. Also, you can customize a lot of the interior systems (alarm behavior, lighting delays, etc) controlled by the BIU with a select monitor.

I heard about the 7055 -> 7058 change. The software I'm working on can deal with little subtleties like this easily. I'm trying to write on kernel for these cars and the Evo, since it is a 7055. I'd definitely like to get ahold of the LGT ECU if you have it to see if all of the init sequences and the like are the same or not. I can return it to you at some later point too.

I'll see if the ECU is still available next week and PM you when I know. Let me know if I can be of any other help. I've got a 7055 car ('04 FXT) and 7058 ('05 LGT) that I'd like to read the firmware from.

So, is STi flashable yet? Sorry, I am the noob here. My flash tool doesn't even arrive for a couple of days. I have a spare 05 STi ecu for the time being if needed. I'm probably one of the best sources for ecu's in general.
Thanks,
Kevin

sweet!! I do a lot of swaps, and many times don't get the key and immobilizer. I know Ecutek was once able to turn off the immobilizer, but took the feature out. Can this software do it yet?
