wideband O2 sensors

Hi all

is there a wideband sensor that can be used in direct replacement to the Subaru sensor during tuning rather than having a secondary readout display, I'd like to have it logging at the same time. Any thoughts on this setup ?

So essentially unplug stock sensor, plug into new wideband sensor and run that during logging with stock ECU reading voltage output.

Stock sensor saturates at 11.1 lambda, I'm guessing we probably run in the 9's :)

Some of the loggers available support aftermarket wideband input, via serial port.

From what I understand, exhaust backpressure will also throw off your readings anyway. Basically any time you are in the rich range where the stock sensor doesn't work well you will also have backpressure. The stock sensor doesn't even get used in open loop.

If want accurate wideband logs, you need an extra aftermarket system with the sensor after the turbo. I recommend the Innovate LC-1. It is very widely supported and not just with Openecu tools.

yes that sounds like a good sensor, was hoping to get away with just the sensor rather than the converter with it to save some $. nevermind :)

Without a controller the only think you can tell from most O2 sensors is rather you are rich or lean of 'stoich' (14.7:1). This sort of narrow band sensing is useful if you are just trying to keep the vehicle closed loop at 14.7:1 for emissions, but pretty useless if you are trying to tune or log.

Both our LC-1 and LM-1 wideband controllers have two analog outputs, which can be independantly programmed to simulate other types of controller outputs (including narrowband). So you could potentially feed one to the ECU and one to a data logger.

Both units also have a serial output for sampled data in digital format. With both publish the serial protocols and offer a free SDK to help other logging/tuning software developers integrate this serial output into their applications.

As a side note, I think you mean 'AFR', not lambda. Lambda is a fuel independant method of measuring the stoichiometric ratio. You can convert to AFR by using the proper fuel multiplier. For example, stoich in lambda is always 1.0. 1.0 x 14.7 = 14.7, the AFR we normally associate with the stoichmetric ratio for automative fuel.

In lambda, theoretical 'best power' is typically around .85-.86, stoich (again) is 1.0 and 'best economy' is around 1.05. Best Power is often not sustainable, especially with turbo, so mixture is often richer (say .74-.75 lambda). But an AFR in the 9.something range would be an AFR of about .61 - .65 in lambda, which sounds awfully rich to me.

Hi

Innovate don't recomend placing the wideband senor closer than 3 foot from the turbo. The sensor will be damaged by the heat if it's closer than this.

Hey Fitz,

I saw on your site you are have a product which connects straight into a tactrix cable to form the wideband sensor Bosch LSU. Can you please tell me where you would connect the power from and how you would send the signal back into the tactrix from under the car physically ? Thinking of making the purchase soon and send to Aust :) Many thanks.... Now I have 2 tactrix cable :roll: hahaa

We offer a bundle:

Tactrix OpenPort 1.3 Universal
Innovate LC-1 WideBand Controller w/sensor

The LC-1 does not attach to the Tactrix cable. However, there is an open source plug in (I've been putting the pieces in a repository at www.enginuity.org) that allows you to log data collected with the Tactrix cable into LogWorks, our free logging software that is already compatible with the LC-1.

I'm also finishing up a Java port of our MTS SDK (the control I wrote that ecuEdit and ecuExplorer, etc. use to connect to our LC-1). So hopefully the Enginuity logger will also support LC-1 in short order. That should give you lots of logging choices - LogWorks, Enginuity, ecuExplorer, ecuEdit, etc.
