Turbocharging a N/A Eclipse, Can u extend the maps.

My question is on a given ecu can you extend the map say from 10 rows to 15 rows for load?

What i mean

No map extensions. I do not think it is entirely impossable, but as of now it cannot be done. If you say, "pushed" all the data down from an AFR map, every function there after in the data will be somewhere the ECU does not expect it (at the proper address). The ECU needs the data in the correct addresses to funtion.

I am running my stock ECU with a flash, APEX'i piggybacks (AFC, ITC, AVC), running 9psi and have not run into any "load problems". I have heard people tune in up to 12psi before HAVING to swap ECUs or aftermarket engine management.

There is talk that the load scalings can be modified, but I have not done this yet and cannot verify if the ECU will understand load going over 100.

Look into an EVO8 ECU yet? If you have a manual or sporty transmission, you could swap out the ECU (possibly after some minor re-pinning).

If you have an automatic, you can still use the EVO 8 ECU but may have to run both ECUs to control the transmission (and can get a bit complex if you’re not familiar with the input and output of an automobile ECU).

Club3G has been working on this for quite some time and can help you out. :wink:

That would be the mother lode for us. You can tune low boost apps. with the flash, but it is kind of 'blunt'. Has Colby given a definitive answer on the possibility of expanding past 100% load?

It is theoretically possible, as long as the programming on our ECU is able to understand the Load extension and apply the changes. I have never done this myself and most likely something Colby has not “had” to do. Most of the guys on here drive some pretty modified (or full race) EVOs and STIs, where extending the Load scalings is probably not necessary. No offence to anyone (because I am also in the same boat as you) but the vehicles that are being concentrated on are “top of the line” performance vehicles of Mitsubishi and Subaru. There is a tremendous amount of liability of trying to cover this over the internet with our platform of vehicle and would probably best be performed by a "high end" tuner who can be there with the vehicle while swapping. I could only assume there will be a bit of trouble-shooting. I would compleatly understand Colby staying FAR away from this topic.

Personally, I feel this site is more inclined to the update of the Open ECU software, hardware testing, integrating outside hardware/software, defining XMLs for vehicles that are Tactrix cable compatible and more or less anything related to Open ECU/Tactrix. This is not to say that there is no interest into some advanced engine management configurations, where there are many posts on the subject on this site. But the posts are people who themselves tried new ideas and concepts with technical questions. Colby Boles has done the dirty work so we can try our ideas on ECU data manipulations and has given us an “Open” platform to discus further development for other models of Subaru, Mitsubishi and any other compatible vehicle. There are many technical forums that “specifically” handle certain modifications. There is hope for us though…

Try using search before posting, some of these sites will bite your head off if the question was asked previously (I know from personal experience :oops: ). Learn how all the sensors work, what there functions are, how the ECU/sensors correspond to the target devise (like the MAF sensors air speed, temprature and barometric pressures effects on fuel injection) and general schematics reading. Understanding the theory of “I/O devices” will make swapping ECUs a breeze. If you are asking questions while swapping, there will be a good chance at messing something up (again, from personal experience :oops: ).

If you need pinouts for your Eclipse’s ECU (also Airtrek or EVO7-8-9), let me know and I’ll dig up the pin charts. I also have a page on “engine theory” for Mitsubishi 4G64, and covers almost anything mentioned above about Mitsubishi specific engine management system. They are copies of the actual factory service manual and are under Copyright, so cannot be posted anywhere. E-mail or PM me if you are interested in a copy (of just that specific information, I am currently on my ISPs “Copyright breakers” shit list). Let me know what avenue you choose to go. :D

I dream of a day where we might be able to write our own ECU programming with all the options we desire...

Thanks for the links and you make good points. I’m a member of some of those forums and have tried to educate people on Flash's use when I can. I have had some good results with flash tuning the SC I’ve installed. I just know it would be better if the load fields were adjustable.

I don’t have any illusions about where the 3g Eclipse places compared with the EVO or the Sti in this forum. However, the 3g shares the same ECU, MAF, and MAP as a same-year EVO. Have data logs where the MAF Hz measurements read the boost properly while the ECU stay nearly static at ~95% Load. So the data is there, it just needs to be interpreted correctly by the ECU.

Again, I understand that the EVO and Sti rule here, but think of potential of providing a N/A car with an easy tuning solution taking that car to FI. I don’t think that can be understated.

So the flashable ecu's dont have load past 100 and the non-flashable ones (mine) have a load of up to 200. Doesn't that just suck?

Can you throw my ROM on your ecu? If it worked that would give you a 200% load value.

I wish it were that simple, but there may be some incapabilities (4 O2s vs. the two for the EVO etc.)...

I haven't seen those maps... how do they go incrementally? Does it go from 0-200 in 10% increments?

Never mind, I lied. Oops. Now that I look at my graphs again I see both fuel maps go to 100% at 5 and 10% increments and both timing maps go to 400% load at 10% increments. My bad.
