Help with a '98 Impreza

Hello all,

I have a '98 Subaru Impreza and would like to get into the ECU - first with data logging. I did a little research and found the Tactrix cable will work for the later Subarus but not finding info about the cable working with a '98.

Will this cable work with a '98?

Thanks,

Mike

Do you have a ODBII interface?

Yes the car does so I guess that answers my question.

heh, sorry,

The first reflashable Subaru ECUs came with MY99.
As for now there are no tools freely aviable for flashing for MY99 and MY00
Most of them have the JECS ECUs.
Mybe you have one of those (if its late 98 )?
Flashing is aviable from MY01 with ecuflash.

For logging you can use the ODBII or the SSM protocol with the tactrix cable.
These http://www.vwrx.com/index.php?pg=selectmonitor
are also using the older SSM interface (with the SSM protocol).

Hope this is a bit more helpful answer :)
Edited.

Well that advice got me in a better direction. I tried ECUExploer with this cable

http://autonostics.com/product.php?productid=2&cat=0&page=1&featured

but no luck. I tried your link for the VWRX monitering software and no luck connecting. I did configure the USB <-> serial cable to COM 1 in the 'puter and the monitering software did "see" the cable, just not the ECU.

There are other software for logging as well,...but fix that ECU communication first.
I never tried the software at the link above, but incuded it just for a reference...
Enginuity also have logging in the works..
I dont know that cable.. ..and I dont use Windows at all..
The tactrix cable is youre best bet, but any cable capable of showing up as a COM port able to do 4800 8 N 1 on the K-line should work with the ssm protocol.

Model Year 99-00 JECS ECUs look like this:

ECU-my99-TYPE_R_WRX

ECU-Forester-S-Turbo-99 (bigger picture)

If you take a picture like this of youre ECU, it would be cool :)

hm, this might not be so simple after all..

Check that youre cable is speaking to the correct pins on the ODBII port..

So the cable does have the K-line and I selected 4800 8 N 1 on COM1 from the Device Manager and I am getting something. The program Select Monitor does see something after I press Start, but the window goes blank and gives a ROM ID of 464849 when connected to the car. When the cable is disconnected from the car, it finds nothing and gives a null for ROM ID. When the cable is disconnected from the laptop, the program says it can't find COM port 1. So it seems the cable is doing something.

I just emailed the maker of the cable and asked for the pinout of their cable, but it was my belief that all OBD2 ports are the same, hence why a basic Autozone code scanner can work on a bunch of cars...

Thanks for your input NoCtrl

Bummer, I just answered my own question...

http://pinouts.ru/Devices/car_obd2_pinout.shtml

No mention of pins 12/13 being used for TX/RX, but at least the g/f has a '01 Jetta.
