Hi,

did anybody ever try flashing a 2004 ecu into a 2002 or 2003...

I know you can run a 2002-3 ecu on a 2004 engine without problems...

Is it possible to do it or is there something preventing it??

Thanks

I was under the impression that you shouldn't try to copy an entire ROM image from one revision of the ECU to another. We've copied the whole thing verbatim between two ECU's that are the same revision without problems. We modified fuel maps on an '05 image with data from an '04 image using TunerPRO. This is only changing a few of the tables in the ROM, not copying the whole thing.

The actual Table data is useable from each revision as far as the resolution is concerned. However the older 2003 maps have 2 additional rows of resolution (similar to the EURO WRX) and you would have to interpolate the data. As far as hardware compatibility it is not recommended because the ROM's are programmed for hardware address changes and most MY's are not the same hardware.

Rule of Thumb is this:

MY02 is compatible with MY02 (A4SGE01C Available Latest)
MY03 is compatible with MY03 (A4TC401L Latest )
MY04 is compatible with MY04/MY05 (A4TF520E/F Available Latest)
MY05 is compatible with MY04/MY05 (A4TF810E/F Latest)

its very different between the markets though because of (as you mentioned) the hardware changes.

i've recently tried to flash the entire MY03 and MY05 Spec C to my MY05 AUS/SA STI. the flash worked 100% and the car starts and seems to run fine but there is a permanent CEL. P0350 = ignition coil primary/secondary circuit. doing the traditional cel fix only removes it from the historic dtc list but it still appear as a current cel. there is definately more to it than just comparing model/years.

ideally if you want to you should get a copy of the ecu input pdf and compare to make sure they match.

I ran an "05" map on my car today(MY04), and it ran fine, but ecuexplorer didn't really seem to know what to do with it, thing were funny, I could not figure out how to get the IAM. So I changed the values on an 04 map and ecuexplorer see it fine, probably somthing I did wrong, but weird none the less.
