while I realise this sounds like a stupid noob problem, the typical noob answers have not given me a solution.
simple story.
2004 wrx sti usdm
I have a 2.0 cable, openecu version 1.38, and can not connect to my ecu.
here is a screen shot of the error log:
Image

I have made sure both sets of green connectors are connected, the car does go into test mode (fans cycle). I have tried all of the timing tricks with ok button /turning the key.

I have also tried to get help from two locals in michigan that can connect their computers to their own cars, but not to mine.

basically at this point I know I have dtc's for 02 sensor and tgv's being removed, I have been able to connect to the obd reader at autozone to get free readings from th port, but not to a tactrix cable.
i was just looking for a simple way to delete some codes, any ideas would help. thanks

Have you tried both 2004 Subaru DBW models, and 2004-2005 Subaru hookup methods?

this is what I see available, the highlighted model is the one I typically choose. I have tried the 2004-2005 Subaru USDM Impreza WRX model.

no luck yet.

am I missing models?

 I just got word from the kind people at Tactrix saying that my ECU is most likely locked up by EcuTek.

not the best answer I was hoping for, but at least it is an answer I can move on from.

EcuTek'd ECU for sale.

They can be unlocked- it's not a throw-away! There is at least one company offering "back to stock" reflashes for these. Search forum.

from what I have found in my research, I can send it to an EcuT*k dealer and they can reflash it to stock, problem being that the closest EcuT*k Tuner is at least 4 hours away. not worth the gas or time compared to getting a new ecu and solving this problem later. so...while it's not "throw away" there may be someone out there looking to buy an ecut*k licensed ecu rather than having to pay the initial fee. probably not on this site, but somewhere...

I wouldn't guarantee that Ecutek 'unlocking' it actually fully 'unlocks' it; although it should, I've heard several tales of woe from people who have done this and still can't use OpenECU tools.
It sounds like you're going to have to ship your ECU either way, to get it 'unlocked'.

well, I won a used ECU on Ebay from someone saying they went to a stand alone system, and that their ecu could be used for opensource tuning. So for $76, I should be back on track. Is there anything special I need to do in order to swap in a new ECU, besides disconnect battery, swap, reconnect, and go?

Yeah there is- get it security coded at a Subaru dealer. Shouldn't cost too much, perhaps $50-100 or so. Take all your keys in too.
That's a great deal you won there on ebay!

The US 2004 STI doesn't have an immobilizer system, so another 2004 STI ECU should be plug-n-play.

It was as Jon[in CT] said plug and play, I swapped ECUs, downloaded a stock map, flashed, and deleted a couple of pesky DTC's without a problem.

Thanks for all the help. case solved.
