Newbie dumb question #1

Hopefully I will not have to ask many dumb questions but I own a 2005 Forrester XS. Will I be able to access the ecu to read and reset error codes using an Openport 1.2 and EcuExplorer?
Currently I am just interested in viewing and learning about ecu programming.
