A local 08 wrx owner was tuned on ecutek but the tuner is some 600 miles away.

This can be done but you will lose your EcuTeK tune.
There are a couple of companies who can do this. Search this forum.

So I read that the Cobb AP2 can overwrite the EcuTek ROM and borrowed one to try. Sadly, it didn't work. Must be something to do with the CAN bus models.
