collection of def files for each ECUflash version?

I'm new to this and reading around it seems people have many issues with the def file/ECUflash version combination. I assumed the def files would be non-changing. Could anyone shed any light on this? I intend to get the openport2 for CAN ecu so will be using ECUflash 1.38. I wont have the option of changing ECUflash versions to aid compatability! Any suggestions?
