It can datalog fine but will not read from the ecu. I get a following message using two different versions of ecuflash.

Sounds like a driver version mismatch; I could be wrong of course.
Just a stab in the dark: do you happen to have any other USB devices connected? I've seen other FTDI-based USB peripherals mess around with these apps.
