Am I doing it right? (04 Evo) T

This is what I do:
Plug cable USB to computer
Click on "read from ECU"
Follow prompt and plug connectors, turn IGN to on and hit enter
After it reads I then click on my saved tune and "write to ECU"
turn off ignition and unplug

Do I have to "read from ECU" prior to "writing to ECU"? Thats what I've been doing.

If yes, Do I need to turn IGN to off between the two

Is there any rule of thumb for ECU safety for the process of pluggin in the cable and having IGN to "on" while tuning and datalogging (after log can I keep it hooked up till car is off

Or any "do's" or "dont's" on when to unplug/plug the stuff

You don't have to read the ecu everytime you flash it. As far unplugging goes. I just close all programs before unplugging.
