Why is are there no How Tos on this site?

I've been looking through this site and there's plenty of information. As most, I'm a newbie and I really don't know much on what to do. I would love to see some How Tos on the site, just like other have. Maybe even include short videos?

Someone new coming to site, such as muself, is easily overwhelmed by the vast information and no place to start learning from the start about the software/hardware available. For example, How Tos can be made as such:

1. How to read from your ECU
2. How to back up your ECU
3. How to reflash your ECU
4. ECU tuning 101 (the basics on tuning)
etc.
etc.
etc.

Maybe some of you knowledgeable people can take some of these challenges and make some good write ups. I would do so, but don't know where to start since I don't know how to person such things. I've made some really good write ups when it comes to installing things and have received many emails for such write ups. I know that it takes time to do these type of write ups, but it's well worth it. Of course, video How Tos would be even better :)

or maybe we could have everyman and his dog blow an engine without learning about the whole process hehe. :)

seriously.

There is heaps of info within these threads, also scoobypedia has quite a lot of info too.

Lets not get stupid here. I'm serious in regards to the How Tos. Every time a new member joins, he begins to ask the same questions that every other new member that joined has asked before. If there were such write ups, new members could get all the answers to their questions and be more knowledgeable by just reading such write ups. Even if I read an article about tuning I wouldn't be stupid to try it knowing the well known dangers.

there is a wikipedia link around here somewhere which covers most of the stuff. The rest is buried in threads (if you search you should be able to find everything).

Theres more info at

http://www.tari.co.za/
http://www.enginuity.org/
http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.php/ ... bilityList

If you have specific questions I'm sure I could answer some.

I agree with Salvi, I'm also a knewbie trying to figure this stuff out... it would be VERY helpfull to have some "How To..." right ups

Jeramie - Thanks for the links. I'm looking more for specific write ups on using the hardware/software that this site mostly deals with. I agree that the information is here, but like you said, it's mostly buried in threads who knows where. I did search the forum, but there is so much information that it would take days just to find it.

Having a section dedicated to How Tos on software/hardware specific of this site would both centralize the info. and provide a first step for all new people. I can simply go there, read and be educated on what the site is about and what it offers. What I'm trying to say is that there is just too much repetative information that is not easy to find for new people. There is no one place where a new person can start. I know that most people here have the knowledge and care not if anyone else has it or not.

It's all rather simple.

You use Ecuflash to either read or write the image to and from the ecu (using a tactrix cable)

You use Tari EcuExplorer to datalog (and pull trouble codes but the trouble codes part doesn't work so well yet).

You use EcuEdit or Enginuity to edit maps(tune).

There will most likley never be instructions for tunning due to the fact that it is more of an art than a science. Hang around and keep reading, asking questions and before you know it. All will become clear.

Agreed more is needed, this is why we've been publishing articles on Scoobypedia mainly to unlock and organise the detailed technical content burried in various forums/threads. The various software tools are starting to stablise now so it's a good time to start drafting user guides and better 'How Tos' - I started on one tool and then it got completely reworked, so have stood back for a while.

Some tools (ecuExplorer) already have user guides so we could publish them with the authors permission.

Good point that we could have a 'Getting Started' sticky thread/post which refers people to the top-level ECU page (http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.php/Knowledge/ECU) within Scoobypedia. Again much to do here to better organise the technical articles but things are moving along.

I always saw Scoobypedia as a way to manage and present information, always linking back to forums/threads where information was sourced.

We forget the frustration newbees face in getting started with this, but as mentioned above, much to learn, much to get wrong! Perhaps you would like to write a short intro article learning from your recent experience on this.

In terms of tuning we could get people going quickly with a simple, low risk 'tune' like the CEL fixes, altering the initial IAM value or raising rev limit by 100 revs. Something they would be able to monitor and prove the reflash chnaged something thus building the tuners confidence. That way they will learn the whole process, touch all the tools and iron out all the problems along the way.

This is exactly the type of information that is needed in a single location where new people to the forum can just go, read, and have about 90 percent of their questions answered. This would greatly reduce the amount of simple and repetitive questions being asked by new comers. I know that you have the knowledge, but you have to understand that a week from now, this thread will be buried deep within the forum and most of the time will not be found. Having a place where all this basic needed information is set would be great. Right now I’m learning all these things as you guys answer questions, but what about the next person that joins? He would have to go through the same process. Why not make basic How Tos and avoid this repetitiveness?

You, my friend, have gotten the point. Once people have the knowledge, they really don’t understand that all new comers don’t have it and want it. The only thing that I would suggest is to actually have such articles posted on this very site. This gives new comers a sense of trust because they don’t have to go to another site to find information about hardware/software that is specific to this forum. Hopefully someone does place a How To section and I and others can begin to post. For starters I would love to make a How To on how to read the information from the ECU and reflash it using ECUflash, once I learn how to do it.

After following the link provided to http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk I know see that most of the needed information in regards to the hardware/software is actually there. Why is that? Why not place such info on this site? I would have never known that that site related to this one unless someone told me specifically. Those are great articles located there, it would now be much easier to create the How Tos because you could just add the link to those. If anyone makes a better article, it can be amended.

I think crispyduck has the main problem right here.

"The various software tools are starting to stablise now so it's a good time to start drafting user guides and better 'How Tos' - I started on one tool and then it got completely reworked, so have stood back for a while."

With the exception of ecuexplorer everything else changes too quickly, I dunno which is worse, not enough information or information that is wrong!

In time everything will come :D

"For starters I would love to make a How To on how to read the information from the ECU and reflash it using ECUflash, once I learn how to do it."

I had one for the 04's modles, but they updated the software to a gui and the how to never got updated :(

How does Scoobypedia work? I assume 1 person has to have access to add/update info? :?:

Scoobypedia is a Wiki allowing anyone to author pages. That's what makes it powerful. No login or user account is required. Simply go to a page, hit 'Edit' (top right), start typing, enter an Author name (can be anything), hit 'Save', and now it's published.

If you want to see a pages changes click 'History' for all differences. Be notified of site changes via the RSS feed, just point your favourite RSS client to the 'RSS' link on the page.

Simply put it spreads the responsibilty of maintaining pages to the community - anyone can correct or improve anything. In general, information maintained by a single person will so stale and of limited use. In the OpenSource community as and when you tap into someones enhusiasum this information can be shared, reused and manged forever.

I agree that a lot of works needs to be done to make things easier for everyone new to OpenECU. I've just be swamped with OpenECU (and non-OpenECU!) projects. I'd like to create a small landing site for OpenECU with some of the following topics

FAQ / Wiki / HowTo
Downloads (ROM library / XML defs)
Downloads (latest EcuFlash/EcuEdit/Enginuity/Tari/TunerPro)
Forums (links to this)
Tools (links to Tactrix, other sites that make compatible tools (e.g. WB02))

Any other suggestions?

Ya, make it it's own section that is listed in the threads in bold red print!
