Help file for evoscan?

Just purchased evoscan + 1.3b cable(for to read engine fault codes from a Diesel Carisma DID 2002, UK). Cannot get it to work.
The com port that the cable connects to in the computer, (by looking at the ports in controlpanel////device manager, is com port 4.
In evoscan there is port settings under 'select com device' (in logging menu). Port one has the tick after it. I cannot change this to any of the other three ports. Do I need to select port four in evoscan? How?
The tick remains opposite port one.
Also what elm device do I use.
A Help file for evoscan would be helpful too but there is not a single piece of instruction with/in the software
Or am I flogging a dead horse trying to get this thing to work the my diesel carisma
