What to Look For When Buying Used Subaru Select Monitor
It looks like many Subaru dealers will be converting to the new SSM III this year, even though it's a complicated process (see http://www.subarude.net/). This raises the possibility that some dealers will not need their 'old' New Select Monitor and might be inclined to sell them, along with the cartridges. This post will help a potential buyer decide whether he's getting what he needs.
Here is a list of part numbers of the components which constitute an 'up-to-date' NSM package:
Note that SOA allows SPX Kent-Moore to sell the Immobilizer cartridge only to Subaru dealers.
There are three other parts that you want as part of your kit - the reprogramming cable, cartridge and jumper connectors kit - which Subaru supplied to dealers as part of the WWF-89 Service Campaign:
22775Z0C00 - Select Monitor Reprogramming Cable
24082X0A54 - Select Monitor Reprogramming Cartridge
24036AA010 - ECU Reprogramming Jumper Kit
I don't believe any of these last three parts are available frrom SPX Kent-Moore. The instructions to Subaru technicians describing how to perform a reflash on JECS ECMs with the NSM are included in the attachment below.
Subaru says that they've provided information to Equipment and Tools Institute (http://www.etools.org) which would allow a tool manufacturer to develop a device to intialize an ECM with the immoblizer. I think there's at least one member around here who has access the ETI's TEK-NET repository.
