Cobb AP + StreetTuner on JDM

Postby mixja » Sun Jan 29, 2006 2:26 am

I have an MY06 JDM STI Spec C Type RA and really want to get the Cobb AP + StreetTuner product (until you guys come up with something  )

I've queried Cobb on the above combination, officially it is not supported as they have an agreement with Prova in Japan that gives Prova exclusive access to the Japan and JDM ECU market. They said to contact Prova, and that the Prova AP will not work with the StreetTuner. I've contacted Prova and they will only offer the product to customers who tune with them....so dead ends everywhere...

So that's the official line from Cobb...

Now I currently own a TurboXS UTEC that works with my current car, which runs the same code as the US WRX UTECs...the UTEC hardware is slightly different, apparently this is to do with a voltage difference on one line into the ECU (if you install a US WRX UTEC, my car will throw a CEL but will still work). So the differences are non-existent from the point of view of interfacing into the OBD port.

This makes me think that a Cobb AP + StreetTuner that works with the US WRX is probably technically going to work with my JDM car. Cobb have almost even admitted to this, using the term "technically" it will work. In other words, if I purchase one through the US channel, it may in fact work. Given Cobb's 30-day money back guarantee, it is even probably quite a safe bet...The only thing I can think of that could be an issue is if the StreetTuner/AP checks the ECU ID against a list of known types, and refuses to connect as it does not match a US WRX ECU ID...

I'm raising this issue here because I figure OpenECU members know alot about the ECUs in the various WRX/STI variants worldwide and therefore will know of the similarities/differences between the different types of ECUs...

So what are your opinions on this?

Yes, so if you try it I would defnitely have a working backup of the current state of your ecu.

Even if you are able to connect and reflash using the Cobb crap, you may just end up putting the data in the wrong locations.

I can probably dump your ECU right now. I'm still working on the reflashing for MY06 Imprezas though. Is the MY06 JDM drive-by-wire now?

No, the JDM MY06 is not DBW...

Do you have access to an OpenPort + EcuFlash? You might try reading out your ECU with this setup. Do you have any pics of your ECU cover, connector arrangement, or better yet, the chips inside? I wonder if they are using the new SH7055/SH7058 in that car, even though it is not DBW.

Yes, I have OpenPort 1.2, but awaiting flash jumper block for Ecuflash (have tried reading the ECU with just the test connector but fails). EcuExplorer works fine.

This is definitely a Denso ECU, is the new SH7055/58 Denso as well? If so I can take the ECU cover off and have a look, unless your question is already answered...

you can make your own temporary DIY jumpers for the flash block with a metal paper-clip. just cut it into 2 U shaped pieces. it will work fine.

the SSM protocol that ecuExplorer uses for diagnostics does not need the flash block jumpered or green test mode connectors connected. the ecuFlash tools do.

It's good to know it is Denso, but I would really like to have the following:

* a picture of the top of the case to get all of the part numbering
* a picture of the ECU connectors, to see the pin arrangement
* pictures of the circuit board inside, with close-ups of some of the major chips

OK, I'll post up some pics in a day or two. The ECU pin configuration is the same as the US WRX (02-05), as I have tested a WRX UTEC on the car and it works...

FYI the ECU code is T1 and part number is 22611AL380 as per the following URL - http://www.jprova.co.jp/product/engine/ecu.html (I have already checked the code on this page for my car is correct).[/img]
