Why does ecuflash suck so bad on evo9's?

The deff files are so very very incomplete and haven't shown any improvement in months. They don't work properly with the unknown maps on the ecu.

For example: when adding boost to an evo 9 you get serious issues.
1. Knock retard FOR NO REASON. There is no possible way whatsoever that the car is knocking and it still pulls timing. So, I increase the MAF size and it stops pulling timing. This only works for a few extra psi.
Maybe an overactive knock sensor. Subarus had that for a long time. Maybe this car does too. However, adjusting the knock filters does absolutely nothing. Unlplug knock sensor? Same thing.

My conclusion, THERE IS SO MUCH MISSING from the ecu defs that the evo9's are practically not safely open source tunable for more than say 60hp. Sure you could do more, but you have to lie to the ECU and bypass safety features.

Subaru has implemented a "Desired Torque" map. When you exceed the desired torque it cuts Wastegate Duty Cycle. On the LGT's its 30.2%. So in order to properly tune those bastards you need to get that map or add your own boost controller.

My guess is that mitsu has a similar map. That instead of cutting wastegate duty cycle, it cuts timing.

Can ANYONE look into this? I am at the end of my resources. I can give EVO9 ROMS out the yin yang if they are needed for evaluation.

I am one of the larger monetary contributors to the enginuity program and I'd be willing to contribute monetary to ecuflash as well if it helps make results.

Don't you think it's a little unfair to say the ECUFlash sucks because of this problem? It's a bit like building a house, running out of nails, and saying "Man, this hammer sucks, I can't build my house!"

imprezarsx, you know all this already, but for the sake of others reading, the XML defs are something that people have to work out themselves and if they want to, publish for the general public to use. It's not Colby's responsibility (or anyone elses other than you) to come up with XML defs for every EVO / WRX ROM out there.

From what I've hear the EVO9 does have a lot more sneaky features when comared with EVO8. To get an understanding of these, you really need to know what you're doing; it's not a 5-minute job.

ECUFlash Rocks!!

If you're that sore about it, I'm sure you could find a consultant to disassemble your EVO9 rom. You may not like the hourly rates, though. It's very ponderous work even if you have a starting point and know what you're looking for.

I know there is a fair community on the EvoM boards. You might want to ask there. Several of that crowd are into disassembling the code and might be willing to help flesh out the EVO9 defs.

wow. you guys took that totally the wrong way.

but ok.

I use ecuflash every day for it's flashing capabilities. FOr that, it works great and I love it. The new 1.3 got everything right.

Except EVO9's.

So again, since there hasn't been any progress on the evo9 defs...

do YOU know what you are looking for? I sent this to you via PM hoping that YOU were the guy for the job. I like to contribute to a project like ECUFlash and Enginuity, not just some joe shmo's pocket book.

It doesn't suck for the 9 you are just too lazy to learn how to look up the definitions yourself and want someone to do it for you. In fact the 9 has SHOWN THE MOST WHP GAINS ON A FLASHED ROM and otherwise stock car than the evo 7s and 8s

nice asshole.
Did you even read the whole thread?
Of all things, I am not lazy. I accept that I'm not XML or HEX saavy. Even if I was, I don't have a whole lot of free time on my hands with two jobs. I am in the navy and work 8 hours a day there, then I leave and tune two cars a day after that. By the time it's all done, I hardly have enough time to read posts from jerks like you or visit my very patient (and hot) wife. As it is today, I've been up since 530 cleaning the house and assembling my new lawnmower so I can mow the lawn today before my 3 dyno tunes. And hey, it's Saturday.

There are many things in this world that I do myself. There are others that I am willing to pay people to do. I have said this three times already: I'm willing to pay someone for their time. Just like all the tunes I get every month . Are they lazy because they want me to tune their car for them? NO. They don't have the equipment or fully understand tuning and are willing to pay the person who does. I don't fully understand Java, XML and HEX. I'm willing to pay someone who is. I don't want to screw it up. I was hoping Freon or teacups or someone would be the recipient of my $$$ because they deserve it. They have been doing a lot of this at a cost to them and free to us. I contribute $$$ to the enginuity project every month because they work hard and most other people are too cheap.

Oh, and I did some more research since I posted this thread. Turns out the gains I'm getting are pretty much all you can get on the stock exhaust due to excessive back pressure.

Regardless, there is still more on this ecu to be discovered.

Does anyone have any real answers or anything constructive to put out?

I am asking for help here. The title was just supposed to get your attention. jeez people

1)Watch your language. This forum is supported by enthusiasts, not fanatics.
If you really are in the Navy, respect your uniform and show manners.

Nobody owes you anything, we just read your very aggressive post and it shows you have absolutely no idea what you are doing.

2)Since you already have your hands full, better consult a real tuner. Stop whining.

3)You think assembling your lawn mower is more important than having correct ECU definitions? You must be kidding me.

And we really don't care about you or your wife or any part of your life.

I know more about the workings of these cars than you do.

Some of us are adults with houses that need to be taken care of. When you are a big boy with your own house, I hope to god that you keep your house in good shape with a nicely mowed lawn. Or are you the type of person with 5 busted ass cars on the grass? I was gone for two weeks and this was my first day home with TALL grass to be taken care of.
And we really don't care about you or your wife or any part of your life.

sounds like someone doesn't get much action or love.

Look pal. I have priorities. I have a life. I have a business. I do very well at what I do. Programming XML isn't one of them. I have other things to do with my time. So I asked if anyone would be willing to do it for me. And I NEVER asked it to be done for free. I never said ANYONE owes me. I offered to pay someone for their time.

I'm sorry if my first post sounded like I was bitching.
This post and the previous you can take however you want. I suggest this way, salex, EAT ME. :)

could someone just delete the thread? Forget I said anything. Didn't realize there were so many babies here.

Cliffnotes;

IRSX: Why does ECU flash suck so bad on Evo 9s?
Forum: OMG!!??! WTF? BBQ? STFU!!??! FOAD!!!
IRSX: Damn, you people are so negative. And you're babies, too.

C'mon. What did you expect? Did you really have to throw in one more insult before you let it drop?

It's a little weird. You came across as a pretty decent guy up 'til now. Professional, even.

I gave lots of data. Offered even more.

Stated my limitations.

Offered compensation. didn't want anything for free unlike most people here.

I didn't just say THIS SUCKS. I said I loved the program and use it everyday. I also said earlier I was playin' with the title.

However, people didn't read or comprehend.

I got people jumping on me from the title alone. People calling me lazy, saying I don't know anything, having the nerve to say "respect the uniform" all kinds of crap.

I said I needed help and all I got was jerk off responses.

Put a lot of these same people in a room and they'd talk to you sooner than insult you. Put them at a computer and they develop internet ego.
I'm blunt and honest.

Someone said this site was supported by 'enthusiasts not fanatics'. Enthusiasts would have read the posts and not flipped out at the title. Fanatics throw in ignorant insults without reading or using common sense.
Your cliff notes are definitely the way a fanatic would read the thread. There is much more than that.
So he was wrong. There are a lot of fanatics.
