Techtom (sp) Yoshio ECU able to be reflashed?

I had my '02 WRX ECU reflashed by Yoshio in Canada prior to Ecutek and AccessPort options being available. I believe he used a protocol developed by TechTom (sp?) and actually de-soldered the ROM, reflashed it on the bench and then soldered back in. Any idea if I'll have a problem reflashing this? Or do you think I should just sell the ECU as is and buy a virgin ECU to work with? Thanks.

There is no ROM to desolder. As long as special code changes were not made to prevent standard reflashes, you should be able to reflash it. Be sure to read out the old ROM first for reference!

Yoshio used to actually desolder the microcontroller in the beginning.
The Toronto Subaru Club got a big enough group buy together in order to make it worthwhile for him to buy the equipment to do our cars.
Later, they came out with the ability to reflash through the method we have now.
I think you could backup and restore that rom without too much trouble.

Thanks Spiider. Sounds like you were a Yoshio convert early on as well. Just got my cable in so I'm anxious to run some logs and see what I'm dealing with. I'm sure they'll end up here for analysis.

This sounds really interesting.. Could we solder a socket in place of the microcontroller, and reflash or use an ostrich for realtime tuning that way?

No! To quote myself 4 posts ago "There is no ROM to desolder" - the flash memory is self contained on the microcontroller.

Realtime tuning is much easier to do with software anyway... Don't worry - we'll get there.

Yes, Colby is right its not an eeprom like that 27cXXX series eeprom.
Its rom storage built into the microcontroller.
Yoshio used to desolder it, take it out, reflash it with the tectom unit, then solder it back in. Now he can just plug in and do it the way we do it through the port.
I'm assuming we can still access it normally since he did not do anything extraordinary to cut tracks or anything like that to stop in-circuit programming.
