Saw this in another thread here:
S54fan wrote:Just had a look at this file in Ecuedit's hex editor and I see the following patterns/guesses: (addresses in hex, row lengths in decimal - a row in Ecuedit hex editor is like a load column in ECUflash).

Fuel map 18A9 row length 15
and 19bf

Timing 1df1 row length 19
and 1f61

20d1 length 19 one of those fuel mod maps with a lean spot in it not sure what they do?

2506, 251a, 252e duty cycle max 1/2/3 length 16
2542, 2556, 256a load targets 1/2/3 length 16

I was wondering how much Hex I have to stare at to see patterns like that? I have opened Evo ones in EcuEdit and used hex viewer to gawk at, but admit I dont know what I am doing. Really keen to learn, but I kinda expect I will need a fair bit of spare time to learn that sort of thing. Any pointers, or anywhere I can go? Books...?

There is only so much you can do looking at the hex. The hex editor in Ecuedit color codes the values, so you can sometimes spot repeating patterns like the 3D maps.

From there you can try 1byte, 2byte, and 4byte, and change the number of columns on the display to see if you can find out how big the map really is. If you do, you can make a new map and put the beginning value in, the row and column number.

On the Subaru DBW ECU's there is actually a list of all the 2D and 3D maps in the middle of the ROM. It has the row count, column count, data byte length, and conversion gradient and slope values. There is a thread on it, look for something like "32bit axis" on the forum.
