To CAN or not to CAN

I'm thinking of putting in the hardware for CAN bus support in the next version of the OpenPort, but looking at
this thread on NASIOC it appears there won't be CAN support until 2007. Is this true? I was hearing that there would be CAN in the 2006 models. Does anyone have good information on this?

Colby,
According to my information (ETI) Subaru will employ CAN in 2006.
If you need help with CAN hard- or software, please let me know. I have just completed a CAN project and use vehiclespy to simulate and validate CAN soft / hardware. No need to reinvent the wheel yourself...

fastchip,
Any idea what protocol will be used? (i.e. J1708, J1939, 11 bit, 29 bit, etc...)
I've got two different J1939 drivers (29 bit extended) for 8 bit micros. One for a Phillips and another for the new(er) NEC 78 series.

Normally it would be 11 BIT ID at 500 Kb/s. But they are free to use 29 BIT ID and/or slower 250 Kb/s speed.
For light vehicles you need specification J1979, not J1939.
It should be easy to port the J1939 drivers you have though.

just some intersting things about can
the 05 legacys have can busses and they don't have speed sensors in the transmissions .. they use the abs sensors for reading the vehicle speed.
the security key sensor is connected te he ecu via can ..
at the moment subaru dealers do not have a way to modify/program the security settings in the ecu
i believe that all the 06 wrxs and foresters (2.5T) are the same way

Maybe a bit late....
Just got confirmation that all 2006 models willl still use ISO 14230-4 for diagnostics purposes. For MY 2007 & 2008 Subaru will implement CAN for diagnostics.

This thread is quite old now, but I was wondering if there was any movement on CAN support in the open port ? Was the hardware ever included ? If not, are there any plans for a new Open Port with CAN support ?

Anyone try Innovates OT1? Supposed to be CAN and OBDII as well as SES download capable. Not bad for $150

Any updates on this? Also it seems that the enginuity/rom raider project is dead again. The new forum does not open now.

quite the contrary, they seem to be alive and kicking, and after such a long time of silence, it appears that we might be seeing a light at the end of the CAN bus

Figures, just as I purchased an ELM 327 to start my own tinkering. I suppose it is always possible that colby's cable is ELM based, but I guess only time will tell...
