Which would you trust?

Postby r6_yamaha » Mon Jan 28, 2008 3:05 pm

Hi
I have been suspecting that ive been getting surge and spike mainly due to the fact that i'm seeing at least 1.5bar and when cruising in 5th 6th half throttle boost is rising and falling without moving the throttle and you can feel it to.
I decided to replace the restrictor pill with a larger diameter pill in the turbo vacuum line, this reduced boost to a maximum of 1.3bar on my Gnome STi Boost Gauge and no noticable Surge.

However i'm confused and this is the question i'd like to ask.

When I log my runs using Enginuity and GTech RR
Why when logging Manifold Pressure Corrected do I see 1.0Bar Max
when I record a max 1.3Bar on my Gnome Boost Gauge, I was
lead to believe that Man Pres Corrected was meant to read the same as your boost gauge reads.
Which would you believe because if my Boost gauge is faulty then i'm not seeing the 1.5bar and can refit the original restrictor pill.

Comments wellcome

Does your car see 0psiG with the car turned off? Does your boost gauge? What do either of them say when fully warm at idle? What is your altitude? I'd tend to trust the ECU before the boost gauge

Either way, the car always runs off its own, so it is more important for your tuning purposes. The fact that they don't match probably calls for a third opinion. Maybe borrow another boost gauge, or swap MAP sensors with someone else's identical model.

As for building boost in higher gear, what is your wastegate spring? Do you happen to have an external gate with a 1bar spring? Most of the kits come with 1 bar springs. You can buy lighter replacements.

Yes my gauge shows zero when off as does my car.

I will borrow my friend boost gauge, will see what it says.

My Jdm Sti7 is fairly standard only the center and rear exhaust has been changed so the cat is still fitted.

Turbo is the IHI VF30 standard wastegate spring.

Thanks Freon, you have given me some things to try, will get back with my findings. Thx
