Help! Can't read from ECU

Postby tullin » Sun Jul 17, 2011 2:59 pm

Hi,
I'm trying to read the ROM of a EDM 2003 WRX, but without success. I keep getting the following response from EcuFlash:

J2534 API Version: 04.04
J2534 DLL Version: 0.50.2598 Jun 26 2009 15:02:29
Device Firmware Version: 1.07.2597
denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
kernel get version
interface close
interface close

I believe I've checked everything:
1) Both sets of green connectors are connected
2) Jumper block is in (required for 2003 EDM 2.0 WRX)
3) Newest versions of EcuFlash and OpenPort 2.0
4) New battery which gives 12-14V - voltage drops from 14V to about 12V when I swith on light and rear window heater.
5) RomRaider logger works nicely. Max boost is 13.5 PSI and max MAF is 185 g/s which suggests that the ECU has not been touched by ECUTek. The car was purchased at 5000 km and has for sure not been touched by ECUTek or anybody else thereafter.
6) Learning view works perfectly.
7) The ROM ID A4TE001G, is on the list of supported ECU's
8) The whole process works perfectly with a 2005 UDSM STI

Any suggestions?

Would RomRaider logger and learning view work if:
a) the ECU was locked by ECUTek
b) there was a bad connection somewhere
And is a or b the only possible explanations?

a) Yes. Locking only affects entering reflash mode.
b) No, probably not, at least not consistently (depending on the nature of the bad connection).
Is the car entering test mode, i.e., fans cycling at key on?
On the later HC16-based models with the 6-pin jumper connector, that must also be connected in order to enter reflash mode.

I've attached the 4-pin jumper connector. When I turn the key to the ON position it takes around 5-10 seconds before the fan starts cycling. I first click OK in the ECU read procedure when the fan starts cycling (i.e. after the 5-10 seconds). I didn't know that there was a 6-pin jumper connector. Where is it and what does it look like?

The 6-pin variant seems to be for some later models; it will have either the 4-pin OR the 6pin, but not both.
Not sure why it would take that long to start cycling.
Any way you can monitor the state of the L-Line pin using a scope?
