Reflashing an experimental ROM - could it disable flashing?

Does the flash process using the boot loader rely on crucial sections in the Evo's ROM image that must not be disturbed - I'm thinking the init codes area and there must be code attached? Is there a routine that needs to be left alone?
Just wondering how likely I am to prevent further reflashing of the ROM by code alterations.

I don't think so. For reflash, the ECU is hard reset and it reads the kernel off the serial line. Even if you upload junk, you should be still be able to reload a correct rom with no ill effects.
As colby once put it:
"That line is literally hard resetting the CPU into a special mode. It
needs to be that way for reliability. I can upload family photos to a
Mitsu ECU instead of code, hang the ECU, and still be able to reflash."

I'm liking the sound of that, sounds like the Mistubishi guys thought about this a lot and implemented it well.
How robust are Subaru ECUs to problem ROMs? Is it possible to completely nuke one by using ECUFlash?
