Does anyone know a good source for init connectors?

Postby cboles » Sun Jan 30, 2005 7:13 pm

I'm looking to find the 2 and 4 pin connectors used on the 02-05 MY WRXs for initialization to reflash. Like the ones pictured on page 5 of this

http://www.accessecu.com/support/ap-usersguide-wrx.pdf

Anyone know where to buy these?

I know this has been a few months since the original post, but I may be able to help you if you can track down some kind of logo on the connector itself. Are there any markings on it? I tracked down all the Honda ECU connectors in the past, which was no easy task, and these look a bit more generic. The 2002 connector almost looks like a standard speaker connector that Molex/Waldom makes..

OK. I found the 2002 connector. It is an AMP 172131-5 housing and a AMP 170349-1 terminal. Here are the drawing(s):

The 2004 connector may be made by someone else. It is a 6 position (2x3) housing with a 0.200" x 0.150" pin pitch. Each pin is a 0.088"x0.024" cross-section blade. The back of the housing has a very small diamond shaped logo with what appears to be a Kanji character in it. The character looks somewhat like this (ignore the *'s - ASCII art is difficult with non-fixed fonts)

------
**|**
------
**|**
|_|_|
**|**

(or perhaps it is a sideways "EH" with a line through it - too small to tell, really)

Also on the back is "Y3".

OOOohhhhh I know that logo.. hold on.. Let me check something out..

As soon as I thought "diamond" I thought I had it.. I was thinking JAE or Sumitomo..

I'm going to poke around under the dash..

I just found what I think is a Yazaki connector also, but that's of no importance to what we want.. Sooo many connectors under there, good lord..

Well, I have no idea what to tell you about the Kanji symbol, mine just has the diamond, which looks like the Sumitomo logo, and says Y7 on it. There is nothing inside the diamond at all..

Look familiar????

*edit*

I've found a distributor.. they're really hard to find, but apparently Kawasaki uses them for something in their ATV or Motorcycles..

Nice searching! The right hand part is definitely what we need to plug into the car. The Sumitomo diamond logos don't really match the diamond on mine, but the part is definitely a match.

The diamond on mine matches the logo, the lines that make up the logo are just skinny. What is the purpose of the init connector anyway, is it like the diagnostic jumper for older OBD generations?

This connector is used to bring 12V over I beleive. Putting the two green connectors under the dash together puts the ECU in diagnostic mode. I know this connector has to do with the 12V supply since if you don't connect it, you will get a 'low voltage' error with the AccessPort.

The connector is P/N M(6090-1149)
The pins are P/N M(8230-4282)

Colby, do you know where we can get these? I think I'm about to just say screw it and buy a different male and female connector and solder it on.. Or, better yet, just complete the circuit with a switch.

Many of us just use a simple piece of wire to jumper it, like pictured here:

There is no harm in leaving it connected full time. This is what I and most folks do.
You only connect the green connectors when you are flashing, but the flash block can stay connected.

Oh! I thought it would drain my battery. I did jumper it with wire last night, and I was looking for a way around it because it was a nightmare to do in the dark (and I don't imagine it's much easier with light). Now I just need a more convenient way to connect the green ones.. :)

As an aside, I was really surprised with how much battery I drained having it connected just long enough to dump my ECU.

I have sources for these connectors - the problem is that I can't get them in the smaller quantities we need (e.g. < 10k). I'm still working on it though. I leave this connected all of the time in all of my cars. This does not drain the battery. Leaving an OpenPort plugged in *will* drain your battery eventually, however.
