i believe i selected the "no not this time" and manually pointed the installation to the folder where i unzipped the files

That was the correct action. I was just trying to explore possible reasons why EcuFlash can't do a successful SSM protocol Init command, whereas EcuExplorer succeeds.

have tried the subaru 1.2 cable; same response

apparantly for SH7058 - the flashing hardware will be different? can anyone shed light?

All green plugs?

I know this may be an obvious point.... have you plugged together BOTH green plugs?

There is one on the passenger side near the ECU, which you have a picture of, but there is also one under the outside kick plate on the drivers side floor e.g. under the plastic cover near your accelerator pedal.

Also, I have never found any difference in timing the turning on of the ignition and pressing the OK button to read the ROM. I just turn the car to on, and then press OK whenever I get around to it.

The ODO shows Er HC and the ROM reads (I had to use the STI 04 setting in ecuflash).

Hope some of this helps.

yes have tried all combinations
green plug near the ecu + green plug near the accelator kick pedal

notice the difference in wiring below

How many times have you tried to read the ROM from other Subarus (not yours) and were you ever successful?

unfortunately no.. i have not been able to get my hands on another doner who will let me try on his subaru...
you suspect that the problem may lie elsewhere? (laptop, installation etc)
