Finished the initial concept of my logger/dash...

Postby Kha0S » Thu Jul 21, 2005 2:13 pm

I've been hacking around with the SSM protocol, and wrote a set of handlers in Processing (which uses a lot of Java, so I spent time looking at ECU for protocol details and JopenECU for Java-specific serial routines).

The advantage of Processing (www.processing.org) is that it supports very rapid development of 2D and 3D graphical primitives. It obviously gives up some efficiency (I'm actually a C/C++ programmer for my day job), but gains a lot for rapid prototypes.

Here's a screenshot of it logging data from my '02 WRX... right now, it only does digital dash and no file logging, and the parameters are hard-coded, but I'm in the process of working on an intuitive GUI to set up the layout and graph types of the dash.

Without further ado, a quick screenshot:

Good start, but what kind of speed will you be able to get?

I'm getting data at 9Hz or so (typical for SSM-based loggers), but I've written an interpolation scheme to smooth needle movement substantially that improves the user experience by a lot.

I added some new stuff tonight, including easier variable configuration (still very manual, but it opens things up to a drag/drop system in the near future), colored needles, etc.

After I get all the initial features I want put into the system, I'll release source so people can play around with it.

I grabbed a video clip of it running this morning... the way I'm capturing video from the application is kind of slow (10fps), so the needle movement isn't nearly as smooth in the video as it is in the actual application... but here it is:

... and some more visualization options, and the beginnings of my easy-to-swap variable core underneath...

Ha! That's very cool. Good job! Hopefully my cable will make it in today or tomorrow, so I can check this out when it's released.

A shot with a partial version of the drag-and-drop interface... just need to add gauge create/delete functions and an option to save/load gauge layouts.

I'm anxiously awaiting this as well. If you need any help beta testing and such, I've got my Tari and tactrix cable going. (spent a lot of time testing software and filing bug reports, btw)

Keep up the good work.

Wow, nice work, the video is great, awesome response. Is this project still alive??? If not, do you want to make it open source so we can keep it going??

Could it be able to run on a 7" Widescreen LCD (800x600 Stretched) resolution so I can run it in my car computer?
