If it reads the SSMID then fails with the Seed/Key, either it is the wrong car type (using CAN style for a non-CAN ECU for example), or the ECU has been reflashed before and locked, e.g., EcuTeK or Cobb.
Also make sure the Test Mode connector is connected (fans cycling at key on).
Try the other hookup methods first, and if that fails, you may have to get the ECU unlocked.

Got a problem with dreaded stuck secondary air valves and want to switch off the codes. Got New Open port 2.0 cable and have tried to read ROM with three different laptops running different platforms XP / 7(32) & 7(64) all with the correct REV of software for each version. Something wrong with the interface here it seems.

Have also previously tried cheap VAG.com cable but the computers could not see the interface in the first place hence the purchase of the tactrix cable.

Four questions then :-

1. How do you tell if an ECU is bricked. Will the car run ?, will it report live data to things like learning view or ECU explorer as I can see live date on those programmes. Is there a simple test to confirm bricked or OK ?

2. When I go into Subaru test mode with green cables connected ( have done this many many times over the last few weeks) I have only heard the fans cycle once. Is there a problem with my test mode ? should these fans cycle every time you enter test ? is there a way to check please ?

3. Steven, did you ever correct the problem ? if so, how me old mate ? Can you let me know and I'll owe your a beer ( same to anyone with any helpful advice !)

4. IF the ECU is bricked, does anyone know where in the UK I might be able to get this sorted ?

Thanks

Mal.

Hi Mal-

If ECUFlash is stopping at that point it usually means the ECU is locked already, i.e., aftermarket tuned by Cobb or more likely EcuTek in the UK. The only way to fix that is to get the original tuner to completely unlock it, or send it to someone who has the ability to flash it back to stock.

I don't know for certain if having the test mode connector not connected correctly has the same effect. To be sure, you can read the state of the test mode connector switch using ROMRaider. Do that first and at least you'll be able to cross that off the list. (You don't want to send the ECU to get unlocked when it may been the TMC the whole time). Note that some cars have 2 sets of TMCs, but I don't think FXT is one of them, but you never know.

Give that a crack and let us know how you get on.

Cheers.

Hi radsdau,

Thanks for the reply, this week has slowly but surely led me to believe as you have surmised that the ECU is probably locked and may well have been since I bought the car three years ago. It seems they can be locked and still perform their job and allow live data to be read at the same time ! mad I find that but I suppose it is purely a protection of their proprietary ROM Maps.

I will definitely follow up the test for the test mode, because as you rightly said need to close that one off first.

A big shout out for Tactrix, they have been hugely helpful, well actually Kevin Banks specifically and we have had a lot of comms this week which has confirmed that if the test mode follow up is ok plus all the other stuff he sent, then I can send it back to them to be unlocked. ( I have discovered that bricked will mean it's dead and unrecoverable, but the car wont run if it's bricked, which is not my case thankfully so locked is apparently the correct terminology).

I have looked at local ECU Tek firms in Wales, but have to say nothing there stood out or impressed me as to their ability to do this and Tactrix seem well on the ball with it all. In fairness I have'nt rung any of them as yet , but their sites don't impress, which I know is not a good judge, but I will have to investigate all options before shipping off somewhere.

From what I can gather Cobb only started to lock from 2008 so it's unlikely to be them, but and it's a big but, if that is not true and just forum rumour then it's possible that ECU Tek could not unlock a COBB locked unit,,so the Tactrix option at $75 plus shipping seems an all encompassing option for whichever lock is on the unit. Granted there's a risk to sending the ECU unit to the states but by using a good carrier and insured properly it should be ok.

Next lesson to be learned is how to get an ECU out of the car ..Gulp. I never wanted to be a mechanic !!!

Thanks again for responding, if you have any other thoughts or reccomendations I would be grateful to hear them.

Mal.

So you are connecting the green flash connectors above the accelerator pedal prior to flashing?

Also, have you tried using CAN, as some late model 06/07 XT's use CAN ;)
