WRX: Per Gear Wastegate Compensation

Postby west_minist » Thu May 25, 2006 5:49 pm

Do any know if the wrx have this feature.

WRX owners complains for poor performance in first gear.

How can you combat this?

i've only seen it in the JDM STI ROM's. use it to increase the wastegate duty by a % in each gear. 5 cells - i think runs from 1st to 5th gear. this way you can try to build higher boost levels in the lower gears where the wastegate duty cycle needs to be higher. basically force it closed in 1st and 2nd and then maybe add a little in 3rd. i wouldnt add any in 4th or 5th.

I'm wondering if the ecuedit tool does not show it?

The WRX have these issues and is control by something.

I don't have poor performance in 1st gear. Stock WRXs maybe have poor performance in 1st gear, but once flashed the boost will go past 8 psi in 1st.

I've been searching the ROM as well for this on USDM cars but no luck yet. I only get about 13psi out of 1st and 14 out of 2nd. I'd like to get at least 16 out of each. I know with an MBC it will do it so it's somewhere in the settings!

You do know that the amount of boost you can make is dependant upon how much load you can put on a motor to get it to generate enough exhaust gas energy to do it's job... Basically if you tune for 16 in 1st you will overshoot that in the other gears because of the added load.

Openecu issues. Just lost what I type.

Yep I know. I will see what performance arts I have when I start tuning this model.

Unfortunately, that is weeks away. I have a subaru meet coming up Sunday, so I will see if I can get another wrx.

Thanks

In my MY03 EURO WRX,I found this feature (Per Gear Boost/Wastegate Duty Compensation) in my rom image by looking through EcuEdit but I'm not sure if the table is oriented in 1-2-3-4-5 top to bottom or the other way around. In the standard rom, it listed the value as -17, -17, 0, 0, -17 from top to bottom which make me curious on how the table is oriented. Why reduce boost both in 1st and 5th ??

So do you think the table reads 1-5 from to bottom or vice versa?

Looking @ it, it makes sense from top down.

I have 2 sti's I am tuning, but one haven't start yet. But the other one, I am waiting feedback on that tune with those params. (Per gear boost/wg).

I also notices in ecuedit "Boost 70 70 70". The map also looks interesting, but no results from test yet.

Thanks for your reply. From what you said, you've already changed these params already in one of your STIs. What changes have you made to these tables? And how were the outcomes?

It seems to me that it is impossible to get the boost right for every gear by changing only WGD Min Max and Boost Target tables. If the boost comes right in the 4th and 5th, it will undershoot in 1st and 2nd or the the other way around. There are always tradeoffs.

Is it possible to get 1.2 max in each and every gear?
