Falashing ECU to Clean Secondary Valve Problem

Postby whattodo » Thu Mar 07, 2013 10:13 am

Hi guys. I am Newbie for flashing ECU.

My Forester is 2006 2.0 XT with Hitachi made ECU. Recently I have had fault codes related with Secondary Air Valve. Replacing valves is very costly. Threfore I want to disable codes with flashing. I have several question.

1. I read several threads in forums. They are saying that Hitachi ECUs are not flashable. Is this correct?

2. I bought VagCom befoe buying expensive Tactrix cable. I want to give a try to it. And I want to start with just reading ECU. Is this dangerous. May I brick ECU by reading ECU? Is it safe?

Thanks for now.

The Tactrix OpenPort works with your vehicle. The VagCom cable will not work with EcuFlash for your vehicle. I guess expensive depends on how many hours you've personally spent working on the software that we supply to work with the hardware. We and thousands of our customers seem to think the price is pretty reasonable. Best of luck in finding a quality solution that costs as much as a sandwich. How much have you spent on the vehicle and modifications?

Tactrix OpenPort2 is not able to read\reflash this particular and ANY other Hitachi ecu currently.

That's not correct. Most of the modern Subarus all use a Hitachi processor. Whattodo, if you can share a photo of your ECU, we can tell you more definitively which model you have, but I'm confident our hardware/software will work with your vehicle. A photo of the inside would be particularly good, and they just clip in so it's easy to slide out for a photo, but a photo of the outside will be somewhat informative as well.

Unisia JECS WA12212970WWW processor M32R architecture.
That is correct.

That's interesting. If that's true it would be the first time we've seen that processor in that year. Whattodo, if you could take a picture of the inside, that would be helpful in helping us potentially supporting your vehicle. If your case is black plastic, the circuit board would slide out after releasing a few clips. If it's metal, it would likely be four screws that need to be removed to see the circuit board. Take a photo of that and post it back here. Thanks, and thanks Sasha for the info.

Thanks for the all great inputs. :P Really, you made me happy by responding. Hearing friendly is good. During weekend, I will try to take a picture of inside of the ECU. Do I have to remove connectors?

mporeda, I did not want to be offensive by saying expensive cable. Price could be reasonable if a goal is reached. Just I want to be sure before spending.

No problem whattodo. No offense taken. Sorry if I was being overly defensive of our product. You might be able to get the case open with the connectors in place. The important part is that you'll need some light in there if you're going to take the photo. The photo needs to be clear enough for us to read the chip information. The flash on your cell phone will probably not be bright enough.

Thanks for the great photos. Unfortunately Sasha is right and our tool does not support this processor. Sorry I gave you the wrong information initially. We've never seen this processor in a vehicle of this recent a year. In the USDM the Jecs processor was only used in earlier models.

Sasha, I saw you posted something about this on RomRaider and some other Russian sites. Are you aware of any tool that is able to reflash these processors? We did some preliminary work on the Jecs processor in the late 1990s 2.5RS Impreza many years ago but haven't looked at this processor recently.

Hitachi M32R based ecu's were not installed into Subaru USDM MY00+ models.

SSM3 is able to reflash this ROM via CAN for MY07+ models.
Bootloader is not modified during reflash.
There is a but. SSM3 calls bootloader code by reflashable code portion and if something goes wrong SSM3 is not able to restore the ecu failed.

This is similar to MY99 JECS reflash problem.

mporeda and Sasha, thanks for all great inputs and support. It seems that story ended. All I can do that going Subaru service and being replaced the faulty items.

Thanks, take care.

I am afraid to say that all factory coded EJ204 ecu's are "faulty" due to exreme AVCS settings for engines 3-5 years used.

After that period you need to disable inside the ROM the SecondaryAir, EGR and testing catalityc convertor and air fuel sensor heater efficiencies.

AVCS and ignition settings should be readjusted against 2000-3000RPM hesitation.
