Programing Voltage out of Range

Postby wrx_sti_01 » Mon Jul 25, 2011 9:01 pm

Trying to flash a 2002 wrx at the moment and having some difficulty.

Read is fine, test write is ok.
But when trying to write an error comes up saying

Reading ECU programing Voltage
Programing Voltage 4.34Volts
Programing Voltage is out of Range!
Interface Close

Any Ideas? Battery voltage is ok. All terminals are clean and free of corrosion.

I wont post up any pics as after 40+ flashes the ecu is now bricked due to a voltage variance

After reading through all of the other topics on this, I still dont have a clear idea on why the voltage is low sometimes, ok other times, to high on occasions etc..
Its becoming a real pain to try and flash the 02 models as its just issue after issue on them.

is your cable ok? have you tried it on another car to see if you get the same problem?

What for?
In order to kill another ecu?

Sorry what I meant was has the cable been tried on another car? as in ever in its life time and did that work ok?

I'd say a multimeter on the pins to check continuity would be the next stage

Yeah cable works fine on all other cars. Only seems to be the 01-02 models that have any kind of problems.

Possibly the worst part is where it says DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION OFF!!!!!

I can only flash within about 1-2seconds of turning the ign on with these early model cars, so I tried and tried but alas I could not flash again.

Continuity is ok, but the voltage is only 4.34 across the jumper block. So I boosted it to 12.5 with a regulator/resistor which worked like a charm for a few hours.

Any more suggestions would be welcome?

I've had OP1.x cables fail in this way before. The internal 12V regulator died; perhaps yours was on the way out then failed completely after a while.
I've also had the 'L-Line' components fail which means hook-up doesn't work. The early models seemed pretty flakey. OP2 seems better.
The OP1.x schematics are online somewhere; search this forum.
