unable to read rom file on evo 6 and 7

I have a tatrix openport 2.0 , have done a dozen or so evo's from 6-10 with no problems so far .
I have a JDM evo 6 and JDM evo 7 which both can't be read by ecuflash.
The 6 comes up with
[13:01:17.428] sending init sequence 2
[13:01:19.456] interface close
The 7 is similar , it tries 4 different sequences and gives up . On both cars evoscan works fine , can log data and check and clear error codes.
I have tried software version 1.43.3150 and 1.42.2595 . I have tried 2 different computers , one a totally fresh install . Both have fresh batteries . I have tried the reflash cable connected and unconnected on the 7 , the 6 has no reflash connector port.
Really stumped ! I dont have any other evos to test this on right now , but It was working fine on a dozen previous evos.
