How does the immobilizer work?

Postby canosardines » Sun Mar 19, 2006 6:30 pm

If we wanted to buy an extra ECU, would we need to have it keyed to our vehicle or can we just flash the ECU to work with the vehicle?

I have the customer send their ECU for the first tuning & then I have their OE bin file on hand for later tuning so the the core I send later is plug & play,
if you can locate the ommobilizer code in the rom you can put that onto another core when you reprogramm
the other option is use the dealer scann tool to mary the new core to your car
this may aply to the subarus as well

Just taking the bin file from the original ECU and putting it into the new ECU will work? Is that correct? Then if i were to purchase another ECU and flash it with the bin file off my car it should work?

I doubt that will work. I don't think the key codes are stored in the ROM that we'll be reading/reflashing.

The Key codes should be different than the Immobilizer code.. Key codes are programmed in the immobilizer, the Immobilizer module is married to the ECU.. If I recall, as long as your immobilizer code is in your ECU Bin, then rewriting a new ECU with your original bin should give you a cloned ECU and should work..

Remember, the Immobilizer module lets you (the end user) add additional keys.. But you can't just replace your ECU..

I'm wanting to do the same thing so I can use a spare used ecu for tuning and keep my original ecu on the shelf as a backup.

The immobilizer information stored within the ECU isn't part of the ROM that we can copy. You can't yet clone your ECU so that the clone works.

Attached is a brief description of how the Subaru immobilizer works.

That's not what the pdf says at all. You can replace the immobilizer box and keys. They just need to be programmed to the ecu. The real question is can the 04 rom be dumped into a 05 ecu to delete the function completely. I have already changed the harness to accept the 04 ecu, it's just switching 6 pins.

That would be nice but I don't think dumping 04 STI code to an 06 would be apples to applies since the 06 STI throttle is drive-by-wire.
