Flash block connector using ECUFlash 1.00.63

Postby crispyduck » Thu Nov 17, 2005 3:06 pm

Firstly may I say what a great set up you guys have here.

Perhaps you can help me, I want to download the flash image from my EU WRX MY03.

I have a tactrix cable which works well the ecuExplorer software.

I am now using ECUFlash to get my image. I've connected the green connectors under the dash and need to know if I also need to put a link in to the flash block connector. I've read the 04+ WRX ECU Flashing Instructions and am not sure if I also need to mess with the flash block connector.

Please see the picure below which I've illustrated.

What wires do I need to connect together? Looking at the connector with the tab at the top I assume I connect both sides top to bottom. Is this correct?

Do I need to do this simply to read the ECU flash image?

Thanks in advance for your help,
-Steve.

1. you only need to jumper these pins to flash an image. these jumpers pass the flashing voltage from the OpenPort to the ECU

2. the jumpering illustrated on the site you mention is correct. connect 1-2 and 3-4

Colby,

Thanks for your reply. So I only need to connect my green connectors great. Right next problem ....

ECUFlash will not download my flash image on my EU WRX 03. Can you see anything wrong from the log file below:

[0.000] kernel flash disable
[3.203] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.062] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.079] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.062] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.078] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[2.281] unable to load kernel
[13.094] kernel flash disable
[3.188] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.062] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.078] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.063] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start

[11.953] kernel flash disable
[3.188] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.094] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.062] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.109] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[3.063] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[2.312] unable to load kernel

ECUFlash is using COM10 - I saw that this is correct from device manager. As you can see above I tried to read the ECU three times.

Test 1: Ignition off, connect the green connectors above, ignition on, ran up ECUFlash, hit Read ECU, then ok.

Test 2: Ignition off, connect the green connectors, ran up ECUFlash, ignition on, hit Read ECU, then ok.

Test 3: Ignition off, connect the green connectors, ran up ECUFlash, hit Read ECU, ignition on, then ok.

I'm running Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2, with ECUFlash 1.01.72 (14 Nov 05), with Tactrix Open Port 1.2 cable.

Just to confirm the cable and computer seem fine and can read the ECU via ecuExplorer.

Please let me know which Test above is the correct procedure and/or if I'm doing something wrong.

Regards
-Steve.

Perhaps this ECU uses the USDM 04+ format? Try setting the ECU model to 04/05. Your init connector look like 04/05. You should be doing the proceedure you describe in "test 3". Also, what version of EcuFlash are you using (look in the about box).

I'm using ECUFlash 1.01.72 (14 Nov 05). I've also just tried the USDM 2004/5 model option within ECUFlash. It's still not working but I got a different log output:

[17.953] kernel flash disable
[2.500] denso_cmd_0x81
[2.484] validating denso kernel ram area addr: 020000 len: 0008
[2.313] unable to load kernel

Is this better or worse? Let me know if there is any more debug I can turn on.

Thanks,
-Steve.

when EcuFlash starts to communicate, do the fans / relays continue to cycle, or do they stop? does this happen in the 02/03 or 04/05 case?

Ok, I've had time to retest.
The fans / relays continue to cycle in both the 02/03 and 04/05 case.
Is there anything else I can try?

The fan relays start to cycle when i connect the green test connector.
I did the same as stevecrisp says in step 3.
I also tryed the commandline ECUflash and get preamble 1 error.

do you know how to use portmon? you can download it from www.sysinternals.com and use it to log serial communications. it would be useful to have a log of attemtping to read the ecu in both the 02 and 04 modes.

Right here we go. I've used PortMon v3.02 from the web site you suggested. I turned on the following from the Options menu; Show Time, Show Hex and Clock Time.

As requested I ran it for ECU model 2002-2003 and model 2004-2005. Please find attached the two PortMon log files.

If it is of any help, ecuExplorer reports my ECU as "MY03 Impreza 2.0 WRX (EURO) [AH750-5141]"

I'm happy to try any other debug you request.

-Steve.

Steve, you need to connect flash connector for EU version ;) Run it in 2002/2003 mode and all will run fine.

Connected the flash connectors (pin 1 to 2 and 3 to 4) as in my diagram above and it could now read the ECU ROM.

Thanks to all that helped. I'm now looking for software that helps visualise and decompose all this stuff. The Enginuity software seems a good starting point if it reads these ROM hex dumps.

Steve, let me know. If your ecu version isn't supported I'll get it in there.
