I had a near the same problem today with a 2002 WRX.
Reading programming voltage was 13v (with charger connected)
But stil the fault incorrect programming voltage.

Just disconnect the battery to reset the ecu and then flashing was ok.

@Killa996 did you connect the 3pole white flash connector?

Paul.

Paul,

Thanks for the advice. I spoke with some of my contacts and apparently this is a problem with some of the early 02 WRX models which would only get around 4 volts therefore requiring +12v to be jumped to the flash block.

I haven't had time to test this as I've been traveling for tuning but I'll try this when I return.

Thanks,
Phil

I'm having the same issue, gonna try resetting my ECU and see what happens. The thing is, I've flashed my ecu a few times, then this all of a sudden started happening.
I did notice the file size is 16x,xxx instead of 192xxx is there a way to convert the file size or type the correct size/ type?

Well I got a wiring diagram and found the connector, it doesn't connect to anything else, its getting its 12v+ supply from who knows where. I am going to try and trace the wire as far as I can. I guess running 12v to the correct side of the block would work just fine.

I had a narrow window of time which I missed to test all of this but yes just make sure you jump +12v to the correct side. I have not confirmed this actually works.

Good luck.

Try this, you should have 12v coming through on your OBDII port. Check pins 12(+) and 4(-) while your key is in the on position. I believe there should be 12v there. I am at 4.1v there as well.

Ok, I ran a 12v line to the blue wire (6th pin on the OBDII port). This 12v is only supplying the voltage when the ignition is on.

I can now flash back to the ecu with no issues.

after a lot of verifying with a DMM, i strapped a 12v supply, energized with the ignition, right to the flash block.

i used solid core 18awg and pushed it right into the flash block. it needs to connect to the red/yellow stripe conductor (4 pin my03 style flashblock).

programming voltage is now battery voltage and two test flashes went perfectly fine.

i still don't know why it worked at some point, then stopped working. i'll probably never know, but i'm glad to be flashing again! :)

I have jumped +12v to the power wire and I can sucessfully flash now but I actually get voltage that is too high now. I usually have to turn my headlights on to get voltage to drop below 12.3 volts to flash.

Thanks,
Phil

yep i got my friends 02 to work... i just ran a wire straight from the block to the battery (actually going to make a wire just for this when i get a chang) and turned the A/C and headlights on to get the voltage down to low enough

so what happens if the voltage is higher then 12v, you can burn something?

It just won't allow the ecu to be flashed. It will give a "voltage too high" error message. All you need to do is turn the head lights on and the voltage will drop within the parameters of flashing.

ok, my turn to call for help :)

I've been getting same error, low voltage 4.2V (or 4.4, forgot)

however I have no problems reading the ROM/logging the car with deltadash/my old ECU was reflashed with ECUTEK many times - no problems at all

so it means that I have all wires in place (I have a swapped car, so wiring can be a real PITA)

I went in there today to check voltage and the only variation I saw was pin 9

this is what I observed:

test connectors disconnected/connected - 5V
test connectors disconnected/connected WITH openport cable connected to laptop - 9V (9.1~9.3V was jumping when I switched lights/AC)

does this mean this pin 9 is the one that I have to jump with 12V? I am unsure because I expected to see same reading on voltmeter as the flashecu shows me 4.4V

if I understand correctly, this mystery wire has to go to one of the pins of ECU providing it with 12V of voltage for flashing, it that right?
