openport 1.2 v openport 1.3m functionality

Postby gregsachs » Thu May 18, 2006 7:52 am

Ok, I've got an 05 sti, so either cable will work if I'm reading the tables correctly. Am I correct that the trade off is basically 1.2 for better subaru support, or 1.3m for only 32bit subaru support but also mitsubishi support?
thanks,
greg

Yes, if you have no need to flash WRXs then the 1.3 may be a better cable for you, but only if you plan on working with EVOs as well. I think sometime in the future Colby will make some new software changes that will allow the 1.3 to work with WRXs as well. At least this is what he's said.

Ok, I'd missed that statement by colby. If he'll confirm I guess I'll get the 1.3m cable.

There is no software change that will make a 1.3M work with a WRX. The 1.3M has special hardware to work with the Mitsubishi (a switchable 16V source), the 1.2 has special hardware to work with the WRX (a switchable 12 regulated source). The Subaru DBW ECUs require neither of these signals, and so they will work with both.

will the 1.3m cable work for _reading_ all subaru versions?

That's a no also. It should work for 2004-2005 WRXs, but the 1.2 version has an additional connection of the L-line to pin 9 which is used to get the 2001-2003 WRXs into the bootloading mode. I omitted this pin on the 1.3M in case it was used for something else on Mitsubishis. You have to watch out when you are putting signals on OEM specific OBD pins, and then plugging that in another make of car.

I could have sworn that I saw a post on here where you said that 1.3 only worked for DBW Subarus and EVOs, but was too fast or something like that to work on 02-05 WRXs. In that same post I thought you said that if you make some kind of code change to ecuFlash that 1.3 could work on WRX ecus. I just can't find the post...

Colby, I currently have the 1.0G cable, would this cable work to flash DBW ECUs since the 12V is not required?

I have a 2.0LGT (Aus spec), and I think it has a DBW ECU, is this correct?

Actually I think I just remembered what the statement was. I think Colby said that he might make a change to ecuFlash to allow the 1.0 cable to work with the DBW Subaru ECUs, not the 1.3... that's the one that had to do with speed issues... correct?

Yes. The OpenPort 1.0 uses optocouplers which as designed have a maximum baud rate of 50-70k baud. The OpenPort 1.2 can do 250k baud, or even more, depending on line conditions. The DBW reflash runs at 62500 baud, and I may run it even faster in the future. Doing a reflash at 62.5k with a OP 1.0 is a recipe for disaster - the checksumming of the kernel protocols will keep you from flashing bad data, but you could get part way through the reflash and have no way to complete it.
