Well im the now proud owner of this... this will be fun indeed!

I believe its an emulator of some sort, a few people didn't believe me at first when i reported that such a thing existed.. well here's the proof :)

According to the label on that ECU and the tables at http://www.jprova.co.jp/product/engine/ecu.html, that ECU is from a 2.0L 5MT Forester XT CrossSports manufactured between Nov 2004 and Nov 2005.

after doing some reading and long hours reading datasheet pdfs

Im guessing the serial looking port is the BDM (backgound debug mode) port.

Starting to build up the interface required.

How things are going ? The 10 points connector should be a JTAG one.

Did you manage to communicate with the MCU through the JTAG connection yet ?

Yeah i've traced all the pins to the parts of the MCU and they all seem to line up with the freescale BDM connection diagram.

i'll be powering it up sometime this week to see how it goes.

well i got around to powering it all up, here's some pics.

I was able to talk to the MCU and get a CALID out and also a TPU description header.

You rock !

What is the BDM interface used in this test ? Is the connection a JTAG one ?

What is the software used for debugging ? Have you tried to trace parts of the RAM while running ECU sw ?

Its a development processor. They are for calibration engineering. It is basically an emulator for the whole ECU which you can load different code into. I use them for Ford vehicles where you can literally write code on the fly. Having the calibration software for it would be a help :)

Yes, this one is a probe emulator for this MCU and this board give direct access to BDM.
With this MCU familly, there's support for JTAG so the BDM software may be used with specific emulator probe or directly connected to the MCU.

I would call Accurate technologies

www.ati.com

Describe the CPU to a specialist there, they might be able to tell you who's system it works with. The larger connector looks familiar to me.

Ahh never mind, it all works
