Help cant connect to ecu!

Hello everyone this is my first post and i have plumped to tune my 2004 impreza wrx.
I have been reading and reading up how to flash and log and i came across a ubd2 port and wondering if this will do.
Its a ELM 327 interface supports all obd2 protocols.
I tried this arvo to connect to my ecu and it said in ecuflash
using interface ft232r usb uart A4006TBC
Interface close
Unable to connect to vehicle.
Its probably the interface thats wrong but i just want to make sure it is before i buy a Tantrix.
Or Does anyone have an old tantrix or aquivalent.
Also can somebody point ne in the wright direction to purchase a cable that will work.

For reflashing, you must use OpenPort cables. (OP2 is latest). There are other signals required to enter flash mode on those vehicles.
