99 3000gt VR4 help

Postby Joevr4 » Mon Oct 06, 2008 1:00 pm

Hello everyone, I'm brand spanking new to this forum, and to the ecu tuning world as well. I own a 1999 3000gt vr4 and i have been told that this year's ecu is flashable. I'm wondering if someone can lead me in the right direction in terms of the availability to work with this ecu and if so, what exactly I would need.

Thanks in advance.

The ECU is technically flashable, but the one aftermarket tool that could do it (ECUFlash) cannot write to the chip. The only thing that can currently flash those ECUs is the factory tool, using factory software.

Unless something has changed in the last 2 months, it's just not possible right now.

I have read over at dsmtuners that with the new 1.37 and 1.38 software ecuflash is not giving the write error that it used toon the h8 based 98 and 99 eclipse ecus. so they may have finally figured the problem out. I do not know if the vr4 ecu is the same or if they have truely fixed the problem but there is some hope.

Forgive me if this is an ignorant response, I am also new to this forum and tuning but not new to 3000gts. As far as I know there is other software written that can handle this (hand held halo has one and evoscan...) do these not do what you need?

EvoScan and HHH will log the car, but they cannot rewrite the software inside the ECU.

This capability is only available on the 98 and 99 cars. Mitsu (along with pretty much all other manufacturers) added field upgradability to their ECUs around the 96-98 time frame. Mitsu's dealership tools can reprogram the ECUs, but only with calibrations provided by Mitsu corporate. Not modded calibrations by end users.

As for other tools that may be able to rewrite these ECUs, I'm not 100% sure, and I don't want to speak for anyone else. But ECUFlash definitely can't do it.

ECU Flash can read, but it requires another tool (such as your Piasini Engineering tool?) to actually write.

Correct?
