CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it has teamed with SPX Kent-Moore to enhance the customer ownership experience through its new advanced Subaru Diagnostic System (SDS), specifically designed to provide all Subaru dealership service personnel online access to technical, warranty, vehicle and customer information, along with Subaru corporate service technical support. SPX Kent-Moore will begin shipping SDS to all Subaru dealers in early 2005.

"The goal for Subaru is to further enhance the customer ownership experience," said Jim Sinclair, vice president, service, Subaru of America, Inc. "SDS was designed to increase the immediate and future productivity of key service personnel at Subaru dealerships, eliminate wasted time and energy and increase the convenience and timeliness of repairs for the Subaru customer."

SDS includes the next generation Subaru Select Monitor III (SSMIII) designed by Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., along with a PC-based laptop with pre- loaded diagnostic software and a proprietary "Subaru Diagnostic Interface (SDI)" allowing Subaru technicians to read parameter data. Subaru technicians will be able to quickly access various applications from a dedicated Graphical User Interface (GUI) with icons to streamline vehicle service diagnostics.

The system consists of a broadband Internet connection and firewall at each Subaru dealer, in addition to a wireless network with at least one access point. SDS is a Subaru dealer essential tool. The kit consists of the following: the Subaru Select Monitor III (a proprietary Subaru diagnostic interface "SDI" and accessory package) and a PC-based laptop with GUI dedicated software. SPX Kent-Moore will provide logistics and technical support for individual dealers, as well as the essential tool packages to implement SDS.

"The development of SDS has made it possible for Subaru to bundle a number of dealer-level service system enhancements that will greatly improve technician service efficiencies, allow convenient updates, and satisfy the company's high standards for customer service," said Pat Devost, SPX Kent- Moore Subaru Account Manager.

SDS Brings Several Important Dealer Advantages.

The added capabilities of the new SDS impacts many areas of vehicle service: technicians get new diagnostic capabilities; service advisors can access important information for writing repair orders; and customers receive faster, more-timely repairs on their vehicles.

Advantages for Technicians:
-- Instant access to all necessary technical and warranty information
anywhere in the dealership through the wireless technology.

-- Instant access to service and diagnostic manuals including:
supplemental training materials, technical service bulletins, Subaru
TechTips, campaigns, SM3 diagnostic equipment with re-programming
capabilities, vehicle repair history, vehicle warranty coverage, and
more.

-- Accurate, "real-time" information eliminates the need to look
elsewhere for possible superseded corrections. Diagnostics
information is updated regularly in the Subaru central servers and
instantly accessible to every dealer technician.

-- Review of warranty history right from the work bays.

Advantages for Service Advisors:
-- Ability to gather background needed to help complete repair orders by
using a wireless device to access repair history, vehicle coverage,
technical service bulletins, and campaign information.

-- Ready access to owners manual and owners reference guide information
to explain and demonstrate vehicle operating procedures. This can be
done either in the "write up" area or in the service drive/parking
lot areas, saving time for both the customer and dealer and reducing
unnecessary repair order write up.

Advantages for Customers:
-- Assurance of proper, faster, repairs because dealer staff has instant
access to information and diagnostic tools anywhere in the
dealership.

Expandability and Flexibility:
-- Internet access in the customer waiting area. With the insertion of
an additional wireless access point dealers can offer customers on-
line access while waiting for their vehicles. The connection is
through the SDS network infrastructure, so there is no chance of
intrusion into the dealers' own data infrastructure.

-- Future capability to order parts from the parts counter while in the
work-bay. With the wireless tablet technicians will be able to
communicate with the parts department, increasing technician
efficiency and productivity.

"SDS is designed with Subaru dealers' growing and expanding needs in mind," said Sinclair. "New features can, and will be incorporated into the open architecture as they are developed."
