Problem with 2007 STi (read me) Warnings!

Every thursday I meet up with a bunch of Subies and this week I had a chance to work with an '07 STi Limited. I hooked up the Cable and was able to successfully dump the STOCK Rom. The ID was A2UG000J, I will post it later when my laptop is charged up.

Since I didn't have a definition for the file I thought I'd try out an '06 ROM since I'd had no problems with putting an '06 on an '05 and vice versa in the past (accidently). I figured it wouldn't start, and it didn't. However after trying to start the fan remained on with the key off and the flash connector out. I had to unplug the battery to shut it off.

I loaded EcuExplorer and was able to see the new ID (2006 STi) so I could tell some information. I also read what I believe was P1472 or P1572 (Immobilizer Failure) from the Diag, this made some sense since the ROM no longer matched...but I've never seen Immobilizer data stored in the BASE ROM.

So, I go to reflash the STOCK rom back and guess what.... Error It wouldn't allow me to re-flash the stock rom...either the Immobilizer locked out access or something happened?? So I tried other methods, resets, etc.. nothing worked. The car locked out ECUFlash from reading/writing.

We had to have the car towed back to Subaru and hopefully they'll just replace the ECU or something to get the car back up and running.. So as a warning to those out there, DO NOT flash any other rom to the 2007!! I will have definitions for the new rom soon as well.

Colby if you have any way to prevent this in the future or know of a method to fix please let me know!!

Thanks!

Sounds like a Checksumm problem in your mod file.
Of course it will be helpfull to see the rom file after reflashing. Maybe some Subrange in the File is missing.

My o.2 cents

Definately not a checksum problem. The 2007 has something new added to it for sure. The ROM I flashed was the same ROM I use for tons of '06 STi's. It's off my website www.osecuroms.org and has no probs on 06. Something nuked the Read/Write capabilities after that 1 flash.

To me it sounds like some pin assigments on the ECU processor might have changed for the 2007 model. This could be partially confirmed by comparing the Engine Control Module (ECM) I/O Signal table for the 2007 to that of the 2006. Complete confirmation would require a physical comparison.

I'm guessing the ECU is essentially dead now and will have to be replaced. I wonder whether there are any 2007 STI replacement ECUs in the country yet. You should try to insure that you get to keep the dead ECU, as it might have some OpenECU research value.

Yeah I'm sure it'll need some work. I'm not sure what the dealer is going to do but doubtful we'll see the ECU again. I'm sure the pin assignments are probably different as you suggested. But I was able to read/write no problem on the initial so as long as the definitions are made I think it'll be OK to re-use an '07 ROM on an '07.. just feel bad for this one because I was leary of flashing it in the first place and all that happened.

But.. we have some evidence now of what NOT to try on the 07 :)

ROM Attached.

What market is this thing? It doesn't look at all like the 04-06 USDM STI. Fuel map looks like the JDM STI maps. Timing maps look new, there appear to be different base timing maps, etc.

This is from a USDM '07, first I've seen of it. If you can send me some defs to take a look I'd appreciate it. I haven't had time to look.

Super super beta, just poking around XML, don't dare use this for anything but looking:

Note: Two drastically different AVCS maps! I think this is the first time I've seem this in any Subaru.

Very interesting.. I guess those fuel tables would explain the "290hp" ratings lol.

Well, the scaling could've changed. I would more likely guess the power difference was the SAE rating change. Subaru lost power across the board.

ev8 no worries, I am sure the guys at Subaru will be able to get the original back to the ECU or get something working.

This case of trying to flash back the original ecu file reminds me of partial ECU downloads and their problems. This has happened to me with another well known car manufacturer's model.
Original ECU would read and write well, no problem. Racing ECU would read ok (partial download), but not flash back ok. The result: ECU not running.

There must be a software problem somewhere in the whole process. This 07 Scoobie does have something different, hard to tell exactly what it is yet.

Good luck in any case. I would have done exactly the same thing you did m8...

Just a general note:

I *never* flash an ECU with a ROM image from another year unless I know for sure that the ECU is physically the same ECU. It is very easy to get into situations like the one you are in otherwise. Unlike Mitsubishis, Subarus require the ECU code to be functioning reasonably well in order to load a reflashing kernel, so if you flash a bad image, or one which doesn't match the ECU hardware, it is easy to get the ECU to hang and not respond to your kernel loading requests.

The ECU can be saved. I can reflash it on the bench, although I can't guarantee that I can do it right away. If you send it to me, I can turn it around in a week or so.

Thanks for the reply Colby. Unfortunately we already had it taken care of by SOA. They just replaced the ECU. So do you believe that we can reflash the 2007 without issues as long as we have the correct definitions? Any success on your end with this? I appreciate you responding.
